Charming and stimulating,

The choir of Queens' College, Cambridge have excelled themselves under their conductor James Weeks - this recording reveals their various facets with great aplomb. Howard Skempton is the focus here, and contact with the composer has clearly allowed them to make definitive interpretations. The singing is very beautiful, with precision and clarity to match Skempton's composing style; this composer-portrait goes well beyond a simple assessment of a style. The opening of 'Flight of Song' is an exciting whirlwind of spoken poetic quotations, while the final track 'Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths' is a moving setting of Yeats' poem; both are awe-inspiringly performed.Judith Weir, Jonathan Harvey and Michael Tippett complement the Skempton, and their works are performed with similar enthusiasm, which is sometimes lacking in college choirs. The organist, Mattew Steynor, also deserves praise for his excellent playing. This release, combining an adventurous spirit with a varied and often highly accessible choice of idiom deserves to do extremely well.
