I seem to be going against the grain here. I've read both Renshai trilogies and absolutely loved them. Granted, that was over a decade ago, but from what I remember they are among some of my favorite fantasy books. The Flight of the Renshai was hard pressed to catch my interest, which was a huge disappointment.
The previous Renshai books all focused on the Renshai and, of course, their Norse gods and magic. That was what brought the series to life next to the crazy great swordsmanship of the Renshai. In this installment the gods are next to non-existent and the magic is so little and comes so late in the book that it is as well next to non-existent. Right away I was not liking this. Then you get the character development that was just okay, if a bit two dimensional. The dialogue was forced way too much and the plot line was almost juvenile and predictable.
I don't know how many times I rolled my eyes when something came up. For example, Treysind (sp?) wandering lost in a forest and can't find Calistan so what does he do? Oh, that's right, he decides to teach himself how to make a bow and arrow, and then go out and expertly use it to hunt food. Then he teaches himself how to live off the forest, oh and then decides he is going to cook everything perfectly so that the aroma will spread through the forest and Calistan will be lured to it and voila he found him. C'mon, really? Looks more like Reichert wrote herself in to a hole and couldn't figure out how to get out of it.
All in all there were some okay moments and some glimpses of the Renshai that I so previously loved, but the writing seemed to leave you wanting. Perhaps its been too long since writing this series? Whatever it is I was very disappointed and couldn't wait to be finished with it.
2 stars.
