Synopsis
In Robert Aldrich's 'The Flight Of The Phoenix', based on Elleston Trevor's novel, a small plane carrying oil workers and military personnel crashes, stranding a group of survivors in the Sahara Desert. As the lethal heat and grating sand begin to take a toll on the group, the conscientious pilot, Frank Towns, struggles with his inability to lead the party to safety. Hope arises, however, when German aircraft designer Heinrich Dorfman begins to theorise about rebuilding the wreckage into a single-engine plane capable of lifting the crash victims to safety. Aldrich ('Kiss Me Deadly') opens his film with the pulsating tension (intercut with the opening credits) of Towns trying and cataclysmically failing to pilot his aircraft through a sandstorm, and from there the white-knuckle intensity never lets up. Boasting an intriguing cast - headed up by Stewart with a poignantly ragged-edged, heartfelt portrayal - and a taut story line, 'The Flight Of The Phoenix' is a powerful and psychologically penetrating thriller.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gripping story of survival (and Jimmy stewart in the lead), 31 Oct 2004
By MR Ellinas "Nicholas Ellinas" (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Any film with Jimmy Stewart in a leading role is sure to be a hit and Flight of the Phoenix doesn't disappoint.
A plane crash in the desert follows into a gripping two hour film of survival and hope. Led by Jimmy Stewart, the crew which include great acting talents like Richard Attenborough, Peter Finch and Ernest Borgnine courageously try to survive the desert heat, lack of water, and high tempers between crew members. When all hope of a rescue is gone, an idea by a German model plane maker, to rebuild the crashed craft, initially not taken seriously by Jimmy Stewart, is eventually seen as the only option of survival and the movie climaxes into a gripping story of team effort and a race against time to get the plane flying. This is a highly recommended film that will have you on the edge of your seat right to the end. The film got 4stars because the UK DVD lacked even the simplest extra, like a trailer. I also recommend watching 'Sands of the Kalahari,' a simialr survival story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection!, 14 Nov 2005
By Frank (England) - See all my reviews
I first saw this film in the cinema when I was a boy of 6. Despite my youth and the long running time I was mesmerised by the story and the acting. Time seemed to stand still and the final scene was the climax of the film. The joy of those men was contagious. I remembered the film fondly. The beauty of such a film is that it could just as well have been done as a play on the stage. The whole film pivots around James Stewart and Hardy Kruger.
Do see the remake just to appreciate what a masterpiece this original is.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a classic, 27 May 2004
By mr g s pope (purley, surrey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Contrary to other reviews on this film - this film is a stonker. James Stewart at his best, Ernest Borgine gives a memeorable performance. The tension is incredible and this film has influenced so many accident dramas since but none of them stand up to this. An Robert Aldrich classic. A cast of true actors and not hollywood premodannas. At the time of writing I am still waiting for my copy to arrive. Enjoy my friends !
