Book Description

Intriguing , original and disturbing ... a very good, powerful story of crime and detection' The Times

Product Description

The young stranger came to town just past twelve noon. Within an hour, the idiot had been assaulted, hands bloodied and broken; Deputy Travis suffered a major stroke at the wheel of his patrol car; and Babe Laurie was found murdered. The young stranger who had preceded all of these events was sitting in a jail cell ...

That stranger is Kathy Mallory. Having left her detective's badge back in New York, she has made her way to Dayborn, a small town in the wetlands of Louisiana. There, seventeen years earlier, an unspeakably brutal act had changed her life forever. Now she is back to take a very personal revenge ...

I read this book quite a while ago. I'm a big fan of the Kathy Mallory stories...this is the book that explains why she is such an extraordinary character - wilful, a trifle psychotic, feral even, but just about staying on the right side of the law. What she endured as a child was certainly gruesome enough to have marked her for life, what happens to her mother is hellish....full marks to the author of coming up with such an exceptional storyline.

I loved this book, not only because it opened up the dark and murky world of Mallory's past, which I've been gagging to know about for ages, but because it had real heart to it. It was as if O'Connell had suddenly got into flow. Everything fits together beautifully, the story is gripping the atmosphere is great. She really utilises the deep south freak show aspect of the setting and the macabre carnival in the final scenes is a real show stopper. Dramatic, gutsy and compelling.

I have all the Carol O'Connell books and this is my favourite - the best Mallory book yet. The insight into how she got to where she is and who she is was brilliant. We truly come to know how Mallory came to be.

Great author let down by appalling editing
I enjoy Carol O Connell's work, but the editing in this kindle edition is woefully inadequate. It is full of mistakes that make part of the text unintelligible and downright... Read more

A turning point indeed
I'm definitely in the minority here in that I found Mallory in the first three books to be a thoroughly despicable character who grew more hateful in each succeeding book. Read more

An excellent story, great characters
This gives a satisfying insight into Mallory's past. I have enjoyed all of the Mallory books but I think this is the best so far

A slightly dischordant note
Although I've enjoyed the Mallory series, I am still a little bit dubious about the character. I found the repetitive assertions of Mallory's hardness increasingly irritating. Read more

Absolutely brilliant, but read Mallory's Oracle first.
Superb story, but I think a lot of the depth of meaning would be lost if you don't read Mallory's Oracle first. An intelligent author who expects her readers to keep up. Read more
