Any film with Jimmy Stewart in a leading role is sure to be a hit and Flight of the Phoenix doesn't disappoint.
A plane crash in the desert follows into a gripping two hour film of survival and hope. Led by Jimmy Stewart, the crew which include great acting talents like Richard Attenborough, Peter Finch and Ernest Borgnine courageously try to survive the desert heat, lack of water, and high tempers between crew members. When all hope of a rescue is gone, an idea by a German model plane maker, to rebuild the crashed craft, initially not taken seriously by Jimmy Stewart, is eventually seen as the only option of survival and the movie climaxes into a gripping story of team effort and a race against time to get the plane flying. This is a highly recommended film that will have you on the edge of your seat right to the end. The film got 4stars because the UK DVD lacked even the simplest extra, like a trailer. I also recommend watching 'Sands of the Kalahari,' a simialr survival story.

Best old drama 28 Nov 2008
Format:DVD
After first seeing this film at school film club aged 9 I've watched it everytime it appears on tv the final scenes trying to start the engine still bring tears to my eyes. The whole film builds up to this climax and it never fails. Every cast member hits the spot. Looking forward to it being on Blu-RAy.

1965 Masterpiece 22 Jan 2009
Format:DVD
It is hard to imagine how the casting could have been any better. James Stewart plays the part of the aging pilot with an adventurous past so well not only because he was a terrific actor, but because he really was an aging pilot with a an adventurous past. Richart Attenborough is wonderful as the diplomatic co-pilot that stands between Stewart and the engineer played by Kruger.

The dialogue was some of the best I've ever heard. "Mr. Townes you behave as though stupidity were a virtue..." .

I'm almost sorry to see this movie being remade fourty years later since it was done quite well (6/10), even though it a scene for scene remake. Good old John Moore (director) also remade The Omen - which is a scene for scene remake. Funny that.
This 1965 Robert Aldrich movie gets 9/10.
