Jermaine and Bret are a pair of New Zealand musicians, living in New York City and hoping to hit it big. Yeah, "Flight of the Conchords: The Complete Collection" sounds like a terrible generic sitcom, but instead this series is one of the most hilarious comedies of the last decade -- a quirky, weird, tongue-in-cheek little show with hilarious dialogue. Think a musical version of "The Office."

Folk-pop group Flight of the Conchords is Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie (played by themselves), who came all the way from New Zealand to New York. They are being managed by the ineffectual New Zealand Consulate official Murray (Rhys Darby), and they have exactly one fan/stalker, Mel (Kristen Schaal). They don't have many gigs, and even fewer successful ones.

As they chase elusive fame'n'fortune, the guys have to deal with girlfriend woes (dating the same girl, a "Yoko", a girl who just wants to use Bret for sex), financial difficulties (Bret bought a cup!), jobs, muggings, anti-Kiwi racism, a problematic rock'n'roll tour, two new fans with impure intentions, a semi-professional actor/compulsive liar who makes Murray think they've got a multimillion-dollar deal, the Crazy Doggz, Australians, epileptic terriers, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, hair gel, and a stage musical based on their misadventures.

If I had to come up with a description for "Flight of the Conchords," it would be that they're the folky New Zealand love child of Spinal Tap and "The Office." No laugh track, rambling dialogue, and the main characters tend to spontaneously break into song-and-dance at pivotal parts of the plot. And it's brilliant.

New Zealand could have no better ambassadors than the deadpan duo of Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, and their cuddly manager, Murray Hewitt (Rhys Darby).

Jemaine and Bret are The Flight of the Conchords, a couple of former shepherds who've left their quiet, distant homeland and hope for a life of `hot women' and music success in big bad New York. At the same time they don't seek the high octane thrills of the rock-and-roll lifestyle; they prefer watching videos from home, drinking tea and sleeping. Jemaine, despite his inexplicably handsome features, is routinely unsuccessful in finding a non-weird mate, while Bret (who at times resembles the late Kenny Everett) is often the tender prey of some callous female.

Nice-guy Murray, the Deputy Cultural Attaché at the New Zealand Consulate, has taken the Conchords under his wing. He's a hapless bloke who wants to be a band manager and the two lads naïvely trust him to help them make it on the NY music scene. Besides struggling to find gigs in places other than hotel lobbies, libraries and elevators, they have to contend with their only fan, the creepy, obsessive Mel, played superbly by Kristen Schaal. They often turn to pawn shop proprietor Dave for advice on women, though his pearls of wisdom fail to hide his own lack of knowledge on the subject.

Underpinning the main storyline is a highly amusing sub-plot about New Z'rs being regarded as the poor and scarcely known relations of their arch-rivals, the Australians, and the two groups often engage in gentle but hilarious social battles. In each episode the lads wander in their imaginations into performances which parody just about every musical style of the last 60 years, with lyrics that would give Wm McGonagle a run for his money.

I didn't when this series was first aired on BBC. What good has ever come out of NZ; mediocre rugby players, palatable wine? OK I'm joking but I did ignore the first broadcasts. I only started watching when Sky Atlantic took up the repeats and I was hooked immediately. If you like quirky surreal humour like The Mighty Boosh and League of Gentlemen then you'll go for this too, and you get music too. The three leads are superb with the earnest Rhys just shading the dozy Jermaine. Probably the thrust of the humour stems from three kiwis out of water as they negotiate the culture of the Big Apple. I'm happy they've stopped at two series, just as Basil Fawlty knew when to hang up the guest register, as they leave satisfied and not wanting more.

Flight of the Conchords are a pair of 'folk' musicians from New Zealand that have soared to fame in America with their tv series.
The duo live in America, trying to make a name for their band, "Flight Of The Conchords", with band manager Murray (Rhys Darby) and only fan Mel. They get into all sorts of problems, mainlt through their own naivety. Its a brilliantly funny (and sometimes quite cute!) double series that has made Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement one of todays most loved comedy pair.
Their original, witty, wonderful, naive sense of humour and atmosphere is a magical comedy treat for anyone, with well written, hilarious (some a little strange...) songs.
Highly recommended to anyone with a sense of humour!
