Maceo, Gimme Some Didgeridoo!
Well, not quite, but for fans of smooth grooves and afrobeat this comes
as a welcome surprise. The Shaolin Afronauts are a 12-piece Australian
Afrobeat ensemble, and by the sound of it their influences are equally
split between funk, afrobeat and Ethio-jazz.
A five piece rhythm section and three percussionists lays down a solid
groove for the horn section to play over. As a whole the album is an even
affair with a few standouts. "Shira" is the funkiest thing on it, driven by a
great rolling rhythm section and some smoking solos. The sweetest groove is
saved for the last song. "The Scarab" is a beautiful ethio-jazz tinted number
and is just as good as the Budos Bands best offerings into similar ground.
Place somewhere between El Michels Affair, Daktaris, Mulatu Astatke,
Antibalas and the Budos Band. 3.5 stars.
