Product Description

CD Description

Flickering Flame - The Solo Years, Volume 1 brings together, for the first time, two hard-to-find Waters' rarities - "Towers of Faith" from the 1987 When the Wind Blows soundtrack and the never-before-released demo for "Lost Boys Calling" from the 1999 film The Legend of 1900, together with a cover version of Bob Dylan's classic "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and the original recording of a brand-new Roger Waters composition, the title track "Flickering Flame".

Product Description

File : PINK FLOYD. Handy 12-track set of solo highlights! Includes a unique Bob Dylan cover, plus two rare demo's.

A Roger Waters greatest hits album was always going to ask more questions than it answered. For devoted fans and owners of all things Floyd, the question was 'why bother?' For newcomers, the question was 'what's all this about then?' Fortunately, this compilation is able to offer some answers, albeit not always satisfactorily.

For the uninitiated, the choice of songs is adequate and one can only think that the inclusion of mostly live versions from the 'Amused to death' album is an attempt to encourage the purchase of 'In The Flesh - Live' rather than find the original studio album (not that this is a bad thing, you understand). Still, the lack of content from 'The pros and cons of hitchhiking' is disappointing, although as a collection of individual songs it was always going to be a difficult choice, and one can't argue with '5.06am (every stranger's eyes)'. With regard to the choice from 'Radio waves', it is somewhat of a travesty that the titular track gets in and not 'Home'.

For the experienced devotee the only appeal here is a chance to sample some new material that is exciting, if not altogether inspiring. The album kicks off with a cover of 'Knocking on heaven's door', sung in his own inimitable style. 'Lost boys calling', a stripped down demo with music from Ennio Morricone, sees Waters struggling to reach the required notes. 'Towers of faith', a statement on the middle east, shows him in more familiar vein, with soaring guitars permeating his no-holds-barred lyrics and the ever-wonderful inclusion of Clare Torry of 'Great gig in the sky' fame. On 'Flickering Flame', another demo, we see Waters returning the favour for 'Knocking on heaven's door', by singing his own song in a Dylan style, affecting a poetic set of lyrics with raw orchestration and the odd over comment. I was hoping that 'Each small candle' would be a new studio version, but that too comes from the live DVD and CD.

One mustn't forget that Roger Waters remains one of the most underrated and incredible artists of the last thirty years, but in the end, this album will be a shelf-filler for fans and a lukewarm introduction for newcomers.

Mixed Opinion 25 Jun 2004

This album was produced in the days before interactive hi-fi and PC entertainment systems became the norm and incproprates anti-copying function which will only allow it to be played on an old-style non-interactive CD player. This means that it's use is limited now I have upgraded, I can only listen to it in my car. I expect that this is why it is now only available as a download.

It's half a greatest hits album, and half new songs. In my opinion, I would have rather seen an album completely with new songs as its not as if Roger Waters has many solo albums out.

Great music however.

On the downside, if you have a modern interactive HiFi system, don't buy it as it won't work.

I'm really not sure who this album is geared at. Roger Waters fans might be delighted by the rarities here. Though the title track "Flickering Flame" sounds like Waters emulating Dylan - badly. He has better luck with "Knocking on Heaven's Door." Then there's the demo of "Lost Boys Calling," where Waters makes a poor attempt at a higher octave than his voice can handle for an otherwise good song. There is some work culled from other compilations, including the excellent "Towers of Faith" from When the Wind Blows (though no Folded Flags) and of course from Waters' solo albums.

This isn't a "hits" or "singles" album though. Note the absent of the heavily dated "Radio Waves" or "What God Wants." Instead, focus is put on album tracks, which despite Waters' deeply interlaced concept material, works on its own. "Perfect Sense" is a favorite. A live version is included here. Even a track from "Pro's and Con's of Hitchiking" (an album that really works ONLY as a whole) works upon it's inclusion.

But still, it's a weird cd. While they do some nice seguing to keep it interesting, Waters just isn't compilation material. Not to mention, the varying production of his material doesn't function well side by side, especially given Waters first two somewhat uneven solo albums. That being said, this CD really won't catch new Waters fans and fans will want it for the rarities, which aren't that exciting. Then you have the bother of trying to load these on your IPOD. Don't bother as this CD, as stated, will not play on your computer.
