Biography

King Creosote is still living on the marie celeste that is Crail in north east Fife, and has returned to the good ship Domino for the release of his umpteenth long player Flick the Vs. When asked of his three year mainstream sabbatical, KC had this rather fishy tale to tell...

"If KC rules OK was the sunny and relaxed outcome of spending an afternoon with the Earlies, paddling about in the rock… Read more in Amazon's King Creosote Store

Product Description

BBC Review

In a world where uncoolness can mean cool and zany uniqueness is two-a-penny, you might expect the original zany nerd King Creosote to be swallowed up. But despite some un-radio-friendly song titles (Saw Circular Prowess anyone?) and lyrics professing ''you've seen me wading through reviews I don't deserve'', his new album Flick The Vs simply does deserve the plaudits - it's an absolute corker.

Creosote, a.k.a. Kenny Anderson's, self-declared fifth album charms from the word go with lilting Scottish vocals and pace and style changes that keep you guessing. Two Frocks At A Wedding is hauntingly delicate, while Camels Swapped For Wives is a slow burner that builds to a crescendo that simply begs for some car karaoke.

Opener No One Had It Better wouldn't be out of place on Skins, while the appropriately named Fell An Ox could soundtrack a nature programme (and that way you might get away with omitting kooky lyrics like ''perfume makes me sneeze, among other allergies'').

Rims provides a Ceilidh hoedown Lily Allen could only dream of, as well as a perplexing combination of depressing lyrics (''I am the worst'') laid over the most upbeat of melodies. Closer Saw Circular Prowess is just epic and Nothing Rings True twinkles amongst the others like a delicate jewel.

If there is a whinge, it's that some of the tracks are a tad on the lengthy side - aforementioned Travis and Lady Gaga lovechild No One Had It Better clocks in at nearly seven minutes long - but when the content's this good you can't really complain. Let's just say it's no surprise rip-roaring first single Coast On By got named Single Of The Week on Radio 2.

Released off the back of the Anstruther weekend festival Homegame, organised by the man himself and his Fence Collective pals, don't be surprised if Flick The Vs makes the notoriously publicity-shy Anderson more popular than the stuff of his worst nightmares. --Sophie Bruce

Kenny's musical mash up. 10 April 2009
By Arthur Dooley VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
After the relative success off the commercially tuned 'Bombshell', Kenny Anderson, aka King Creosote moves his creative caravan back to the Domino label.Given the amount of air time and media coverage that 'V's' has engendered, one might have expected the latest KC product to continue the Bombshell vibe and continue the onward and upward trajectory of the Fence Collective most marketable artist.
No Siree. Instead Kenny has opted for something of a musical pick and mix approach. Mixing curious techno euro beat tracks such as the 7+ minute opener, 'No one had it better'... the tour bus favourites, Fujiya and Miyagi obviously an influence here... Beatle-esque tracks such as the single 'Coast on By'.... Curiously playing this very second on Radio 2's Radcliffe & Maconie show ! ...and more wistful KC ballads such as 'Two frocks at a wedding'.
As a big KC/Fence Collective devotee I would love to say that Flick the V's is a classic five star outing. Alas,in the interests of Amazon objectivity I cannot tell a lie. V's is just average.
Some tracks such as the aforementioned 'Two Frocks' and 'Fell an Ox' are dare I say it - a bit flat and dull and drag the whole package back a wee bit.
After several airings it doesn't light the blue touchpaper for me. The strange mix of styles and the overall inconsistency of the quality of individual tracks just acts as a musical Chinese meal. It fills a gap for a while but you soon feel like something more substantial.
I'm sure other King Creosote fans will beat a five star trail to the Amazon review pages and offer their undying devotion and enthusiasm for a work of 'genius'. However, fan worship and a musical critique are two different things. Worth having in your collection but I would suggest it won't suffer abuse from overuse.

This record has been a slow grower on me. Normally King Creosote and the merry Fence Collective can do no wrong but this one hasn't completely enthralled me.
To be fair to him it was written over a turbulent time in his life and on the back of leaving his previous record label and that's where the title comes from. I can see that he's starting to get back to his roots but it's going to be a journey.
Would I recommend it? Possibly not if this was to be your first KC record, for that I would suggest Rocket DIY or KC Rules OK , but if you have some of his other works or have dipped into de-fence records then try it out. His collaberation with Stephen Mason (Black Affair/Beta Band) works well & have a look at that video on utube before buying this cd.

More than a minor reference to latter day Beatles and Kraftwork!. I've been a recent convert to KC over the last couple of years and found this album full of surprises. Yes it's very mixed but the diversity in styles and arrangements sustains the interest. Tracks such as "Two Frocks At A Wedding", "Fell An Ox" and "Saw Circular Prowess" improve with every listen. Perhaps I'm not familiar enough with KC's earlier work but the benefit of that is the lack of a specific expectation. This hasn't been out of my CD player since it arrived! I can't think of any other CD in my collection that in the space of 10 tracks pay homage to the Beatles, Kraftwork, Bluegrass, bagpipe music. It's the perfect partner to Diamond Mine
