Really an excellent book on the French. Provides a range of combative options. Has the benefit of being written by an ardent practitioner of the line. Very much not a database dump, much more a concentration of original ideas.

Interestingly presented, and full of interesting ideas. It is pleasing to see a book that is also very easy to read. Far too many chess books just contain reams of variations, and offer little to the club player. Well done!

HASH(0x8e151228) out of 5 stars Great book for the Francophile 26 Oct. 2008
By Peter Hodges - Published on Amazon.com

Having purchased and thoroughly enjoyed the author's earlier book on the Budapest Gambit I eagerly anticipated Moskalenko's work on the French. This book has the same engaging literary style with the addition of many games from the author's own practice (some as current as 2008). This is not a repetoire book along the lines of "see variation A4b1" but Moskalenko does a very good job of offering more than one option against all the major White choices (Advance, Tarrasch, Classical) plus coverage of many minor systems (KIA, Wing Gambit, Exchange, Anti-Winawer, etc.). Please note, you will not find the main line Winawer Poisoned Pawn (tG, imho). Instead there is material on 4...b6, 4...c5 5 a3 Bxc3+ 6 bc Qa5 and 6...Qc7. While written from the perspective of a long time devotee of the French the author also includes suggestions and improvements for White, plenty of White victories in illustrative games, and an interesting attacking system for White in the Classical/Two Knights. I was pleased to note that the bibliography includes recent works by Sveshnikov, Watson, and Psakhis.

HASH(0x8da46a14) out of 5 stars For excellent play versus 1. e4, buy this book! 21 April 2011

The author is a writing genius! Moskalenko gives you the tools needed for playing the French D with a break down of variations, alternate ideas, planning, stategies, tactics etc. The book has five parts:

P1: the Advance variation,
P2: the Tarrasch variation,
P3: the Classical variation,
P4: the Winawer variation
and P5: Seven Samarai Swords, for a total of 16 chapters.
The author gives detailed analysis of the options available for both sides in the French but this book is a must read for playing BLACK! Players on the white side can benefit from knowing what Black's options are in given positions. The referenced games are from the author's personal play as well other GMs' classical and modern gameplay in the French D. The games use mainline moves as the foundation for teaching the reader how to play the French.
It's great for novices, intermediate and higher players across chess world. I have become a convert of the French and this book has been most helpful, especially when playing CC. Once you learn the basic pawn structures in each variation, you can go for broke in active play confident in your analysis and planning. The book is well organized and easy to follow and the binding is heavy duty for page turning. It opens perfectly next to my analysis board. I am very impressed with the books i've purchased from the publisher "New in Chess". They have made their books for the "in use" chessplayer considering how hard I've been reading them! All in all this book is 5 star and you will not regret the purchase! "GO FRENCH & FLEXIBLE!!"

I have a lot of books about the French Defence, but this is by far the best of all. Moskalenko gives you several options and does an excellent review of all of them. You will not need any thing more to improve your French

HASH(0x8de038d0) out of 5 stars Breath of Fresh Air! 8 May 2013
By R. Tobias - Published on Amazon.com

This is a rather remarkable book. Written by a very strong Ukranian/Spanish GM, it has developed a reputation among strong players as a fine reference on the French. It is NOT, however, a 'one-stop' comprehensive repertoire book (not that is a bad thing!). Rather it is a collection of a very strong and experienced player's best ideas and discoveries in an opening that he is a specialist in. It is in the form of a games collection with a number of the author's games included, but many by other strong players, such as Morozevich, Petrosian, Korchnoi and Uhlmann, as well as a host of others. The games are heavily analyzed, with numerous improvements and ideas given. Concepts and plans are discussed, so you don't have to be a titled player to benefit from this advanced work. Scattered throughout are 'Weapons', idea variations that the author apparently has cooked up in his home lab. As far as variations covered, he looks at the 5...Nh6 var of the Advance Var, the Tarrasch, the Classical Var, his preferred var of the Winawer, with an early ...Qa5-a4, and a potpourri of other lines. Refreshing, authoritative, and decorated with some humorous touches, this book might not be your 'main squeeze' for the French, but you will value it as a very entertaining and effective supplement to your main French material. Highly recommended.

HASH(0x8d81eeac) out of 5 stars A Pleasure to Read! 30 Jan. 2009

I found this to be an entertaining and informative read! I could tell that the author is a true lover of the French Defense. The only other book on the French that compares with this, is Wolfgang Uhlmann's book. If you cherish the French Defense, get both of these!
