4.0 out of 5 stars May not be perfect, but does a unique job 28 Dec 2010
By Fandango TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Got given one of these for Christmas. Very good product for the money, but don't expect everything. I'm not sure where it came from, but there was no installation manual (download from Maplin. Note the manual makes a cryptic reference to focus adjustment , but the lens is fixed focus which is fine. To preview the image you need to specify that in the program window otherwise you will see nothing. As with all videos if you wave the camera about you get a blur, and because the lens is a few feet from the handle it accentuates any movements, so care is needed to get a useful image otherwise even the video stills will be blurred. The focal length is from 6cm to infinity but don't expect to see something metres away inside a dark wall since the led light on the lens is naturally limited in brightness. Saving images is relatively easy, whether still (bmp) or video (avi) but a bit cryptic. Just to be clear, you do need to be attached to a PC to use it, so in practice a laptop is necessary. It comes with a clip-on magnet which rather to my surprise lifted a 5m steel measure. Field of view is maybe 30 degrees - at 25cm a hand will fill the frame.

1.0 out of 5 stars Snake Cam - who knows?? 5 Feb 2011
By M. E. W
Software and drivers are rubbish and don't work - more often than not they will crash your system. I tried on 3 different PC's with the same result on each, even a downloaded and supposedly updated driver did the same thing. It's a shame because the camera itself actually looked quite good and well made but I never got to see it in operation because of the awful software provided. Eventually sent back for a refund.

5.0 out of 5 stars snakescope 29 Dec 2010

Arrived within time stated, well packaged and as described. Scope works fine, software could do with a complete update, seems a bit dated. But it works ok. Would recommend to anybody who wants to look into small dark places.

5.0 out of 5 stars USB Snakescope 3 July 2012
Verified Purchase
After the installation of a new conservatory I started to get damp in the wall of my garage underneath the house. I suspected that the down pipe from the guttering was not lined up with the existing drain pot. Unfortunately the pipe was concreted in at the bottom and I could see no way to check the drain pot without breaking out the concrete. There is a small inspection hole in the pipe with a cover over it. I tried to look though this hole with a small mirror but it was impossible to see anything as it was pitch black down the pipe. I saw the USB Snakescope on Amazon and decided that for less than 30 delivered it was worth trying one. Even though I selected 'free' standard delivery I received it within 48 hours of ordering. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened it. It is of good quality and ideal for my purposes and in a neat case with 3 attachments. You get a small hook device, a small mirror to see though 90 degrees and a small but powerful magnet attachment. Instructions and a mini software CD are included. I loaded the software onto my netbook PC with no problems following the instructions supplied and when I plugged in the USB connection to the Snakescope it worked first time. The picture you get is only VGA quality but it is perfectly addequate. In combination with my netbook I have a completely portable set up. I had a look through the drain pipe hatch and was able to see very clearly that the pipe was, as I suspected, only half over the edge of the drain pot. LED's in the camera head illuminate the scene ahead of the camera and they are very good. You are able to adjust the intensity of the light via a small thumbwheel on the handle. Another small button lets you take snap shots of what you are seeing and the software lets you record 30fps video also which is very useful. Read more ›

1.0 out of 5 stars Vista or Windows 7 only 24 Dec 2012
Good hardware spoilt by a lack of any real instructions (the single A6 page of English 'Instructions' is simply a description and brief specification). The mini-CD enclosed only contains one set of drivers - for Vista or Windows 7, NO DRIVERS for XP or any earlier versions of Windows. As reported by others, attempts to use the Snake Scope under XP simply results in blue screen crashes. Having wasted a whole evening trying to get a working installation on either of two different laptops running XP, the penny dropped - one set of drivers = only one Windows 'core' (W7/Vista). Trouble-free and, for Vista, quick installation on a third laptop running Vista. NOTE: run installation from CD and Restart Vista/7 before plugging in Snake Scope - identified as a Telescope! I would give it 3 stars (losing a star each for poor software and no instructions), IF the vendors honestly stated that it requires Vista/W7.

5.0 out of 5 stars Snakescope works and is good value 30 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase
I've had this borescope for only 3 days and used it once, so it hasn't had much time to go wrong! I bought it to inspect inside my cavity walls because I suspected that some of them were not filled with insulation - even though I have a certificate to say they are. I didn't trust installers to be honest about it. The Snakecam has done the job and I think it was worth 30 to find out.
I found the LED lighting adequate at its maximum and there is a thumbwheel on the handle to reduce it if necessary (i.e. when the viewed surfaces are highly reflective). The camera focuses well on objects beyond 6cm, taking a few seconds to adjust both focus and brightness level.
The installation disk worked first time (though I had to double click the EXE file because it didn't autorun). The driver installation (under Windows 7) proceeded smoothly and pretty much as described in the rather limited instruction manual. When I then connected the Snakescope to my laptop the "New Hardware" installation also went without a hitch.
Initially there was no picture displayed in the viewing window. This was remedied by selecting "Preview" under the "Options menu and the ensuring that "Telescope Driver" was checked in the "Devices" menu. The manual does indicate this, but it doesn't provide a very helpful simple guide through the process.
Videos can be captured by clicking soft buttons on your laptop (Start and Stop) and can be saved if required. For still snapshots a button is available on the Snakescope's handle.
The swan neck is a little stiff. Fortunately I had some existing large access points to view my wall cavities through. The scope itself is only 11mm in diameter, but the "flexible" swan neck requires a fairly large entry point because of its stiffness. You would probably need to take out a minimum of a 50mm slot in order to turn the camera into the cavity.
It comes in a handy plastic case which seems reasonably sturdy.

It works but only just. The picture quality through my laptop is pretty poor as is the still image capture. Okay for the money but I need to save up for a proper one.
