3.0 out of 5 stars Difficult album, 1 April 2003
This review is from: Flex (Audio CD)
This is one of the most difficult Steve Vai album to listen to. Flex-able leftovers is made up of unreleased material and bonus tracks that did not fit in the recording of Steve's debut album (Flex-able) back in 1984.
If you're not already a Steve Vai fan you should also grab Passion and Warfare that is way easier to listen to and features some of the best Vai's songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vai in Zappa Mode, 21 Jul 2008
By Neil Mawer (Lincoln, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Steve Vai first came to public prominence as a guitarist in Frank Zappa's great early 80's band, and these recordings date from that period. Originally released on his own private label, I remember the late great DJ Tommy Vance playing the Attitude Song on the Friday Rock Show and being bowled over.

At the time the world was looking for another great guitarist. Al Dimeola had finished his great series of fusion albums in 1982, and Stevie Ray Vaughn was always to retro to be considered an original.

After promotion from Vance and others private release was augmented and came out offically as the 11 track Flex-able album in 1984, and was followed by a Flexable Leftovers mini album which comprises the bonus tracks on this excellent re issue.

Unfortunately Vai never really built on the vast palate he layed down on this album. In 1985 he played on the great Compact Disc by Public Image, but after that it was all rather down hill. After a stint with heavy rockers Whitesnake, he followed the path of least resistance with a series of hard rock solo albums, which are just not as interesting as those produced by Uli Jon Roth and Blues Saraceno. In addition Frank Zappa released his guitar albums which showed Vai as very much second guitar, and second best.

So for a moment the world was his oyster and this stands alongside Zappas great albums of the era. If you like this get Cheap Thrills & Son of Cheap Thrills by Zappa

5.0 out of 5 stars A great album, 12 Sep 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Flex (Audio CD)
If you want pure distilled 100% proof essence of the artist, this is it. This is music made as the musician(s) intended without consideration to those who may be listening. For this reason, some may find it 'difficult'. Many of the melodies are heavily influenced by Frank Zappa, who Steve was playing with at the time, but the vibe and guitar playing are all Vai.

The tunes range from unconventional songs like 'Little Green Men' funky riffage in 'Viv Woman' a beautiful ballad 'Call It Sleep' and of course furious shredding (always serving the music of course) as in 'The Attitude Song' and scattered throughout. You'll also come across all manner of weird noises that defy categorisation. The guitar sounds are amazing with none of the fizz that blighted so many guitar albums of the 80s. To my ears the rest of the album sounds phenomenal too, especially considering that it was recorded to a budget analogue 8 track reel-to-reel recorder in Vai's fledgling home studio.

So a hearty recommendation it is from me. And do remember to buy the version with the extra tracks.
