Format:Audio CD
Twelve German BPO musicians play 19 tunes in a heady mix of French classical music by such impressionist stalwarts as Ravel, Fauré, Debussy, Satie and Poulenc, and songs by popular composers such as Charles Trenet, Edit Piaf, Vincent Scotto and Michel Legrand, all tastefully and imaginatively arranged for a chamber ensemble of only cellists. This CD is a wholesome antidote to the nefarious omnipresence of André Rieu, he of the oily charm and the careful hairdo, and his saccharine simplifications of the classics and the "classifying" of the more lachrymonial brand of popular music. Nowhere on this CD is emotion confused with sentiment, are light textures mistaken for candyfloss, are no cuts or simplifications forced upon the original compositions, nowhere have cheap effects been resorted to. Contrary to what Rieu usually does, this compilation cleverly mixes popular tunes (in a setting that closely follows the original intentions) with the "lighter" side of the impressionists (although Satie's Gymnopédie's simplicity is deceptive), while the centre of gravity is kept to the end, the rather more challenging Poulenc composition Figure Humaine, which is not abridged or simplified in any way. There is a logical build up to what real classical music sounds like; the ears have time and opportunity to adjust to an ever more "abstract" kind of absolute music, as opposed to Gebrauchsmusic or utility music.
The musicianship is breathtaking, the beauty of tone, technical prowess and range of the instruments almost beyond belief. If you don't yet know what riches classical music has to offer, this is a much better way of being introduced to it than any Rieu production. But perhaps mine's just a voice in the wilderness.....

a joy to listen to 1 Dec 2010
Format:Audio CD
this is really easy and enjoyable listening to a world class performance orchestra. I'd call the "12 Cellists" a "BPO sidekick" and good at that they are indeed. And hearing French "classic" chansons presented by cellos is very different indeed and does the chansons every justice.

Great alternative (or even antidote?) to André Rieu 11 Dec 2010

More Mellow Cello Classics +++ 25 Oct 2010
By Kevin Kiersky - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I so much enjoyed the "Cello Submarine" CD, also featuring the same 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic, that I figured this "Fleur de Paris" CD would be of similar mellow soothing quality. And so it is -- and in addition with added classical stately quality of the "Fleur de Paris" classical compositions. These compositions are indeed richly classical via resource of a dozen master cellists. They reafirm my impression that such a dozen cellists can gracefully present a full classical pattern of music. Even if quite less than a full classical orchestra -- they are quite more than a string quartet. Cellos seem to be quite central to classical music as demonstrated via this fine CD. The interior titles and descriptions of my particular CD seem to be in Japanese for some reason -- which I find oddly humorous -- and seems to show the wide attraction of this music. If you like the "rich cherry color and flavor" of classic cello music you may very much savor "Fleur de Paris" +++

This going to be short all the pieces on this were played with aplomb. The arrangements were written in a style that suits the cellos a excellent recording.
