Product Description

Review

This is a tough thriller, a delicate love story and a powerfully evocative historical novel. At its heart is a young man's obsession with the mother he lost under horrendous, bizarre circumstances. Set in Edinburgh at a time in which the city was at the vanguard of medical advance, Morgan reveals the deep moral dilemmas that accompanied meaningful research at the time. Her descriptions of Edinburgh's Old Town, decaying, corrupt and dangerous, are extraordinarily vivid. Lives were cheap, both within and out of the medical faculty.
Morgan is a confident, courageous and honest writer. Fleshmarket is a tour de force, from its attention-grabbing prologue onwards. (Lindsey Fraser )

This book grabs you and never lets you go. (The Glasgow Herald )

Outstanding ... a book that deserves attention (The Bookseller )

A gripping and intelligent read. (The Sunday Telegraph )

'A dramatic and thought-provoking book. Nicola Morgan is a fine writer.' (David Almond )

Novel beginnings are seldom more dramatic or more grim than the first 10 pages of Nicola Morgan's Fleshmarket. This is sweat-on-the-forehead stuff. In the startling introduction to her story, Morgan, an uncompromising writer who doesn't believe in holding back, takes you straight to the painful centre of what is to follow and leaves you gasping.

Fleshmarket is well and truly a book that thrills, but behind the rip-roaring plot there is a painful truth that none of us should ever forget. This is an important book that lives up to the expectations of its evocative title and dramatic cover. Stories don't come any more powerful than this. (Sunday Young Post )

The Sunday Telegraph

A gripping and intelligent read.

Journey to the deepest darkest depths of 19th Century Edinburgh. The notorious Dr Knox is responsible for the death of Robbie's mother and Robbie wants revenge. Deserted by their father, Robbie and his sister Essie stuggle to survive. Robbie is enticed into the sinister underworld of the infamous bodysnatchers - Burke and Hare. Will he ever escape their clutches? Will Robbie's dream of a better life be lost forever?

I was hooked from beginning to end. I started reading one Saturday evening, unable to put Fleshmarket down, I read until my eyes hurt. I couldn't wait to wake up in the morning to carry on reading. I was transported into Robbie and Essie's world and once inside their plight reached right into me and wouldn't let me go. I was inside the story with them, running in my ragged clothes through the spiteful streets of Edinburgh.

A heartwarming and compelling story packed with captivating characters, gritty realism, hope and determination. A must read, for young and old, male or female. Read Fleshmarket, you won't be disappointed.

Fleshmarket is a book that I really enjoyed reading. It is about how a boy called Robbie, who was about to move into a big fancy house and was taking violin lessons, loses his mother after an operation and then plunges into poverty. For years he mourns his mothers death until by chance he sees the surgeon (Dr Robert Knox) and becomes hell bent on revenge.

The three things that I liked the most about this book were the way that Robbie and his mother’s operations were written with almost the same words, the fact that Nicola Morgan used real characters such as Dr Knox and Burke and Hare and the way that the book goes a full circle because it starts with Robbie’s Mum’s operation and ends with an operation with Robbie as the surgeon.

Fleshmarket, by Nicola Morgan is an unusual story, based on real life characters, dates and prejudices in the 1800s. However don't let the book's historial herritage put you off. Based in Edinburgh in the 1800s, Morgan takes her own approach to liven up the old story of Dr Knox and his illegal dealings with Hare and Burke.

Robbie, who lost his mother at the hands of Dr Knox when she recieved surgery to remove her cancerous brest, is out for revenge. His life is full of ups and downs and his life's path finds numeous ways to cross his enemy's path, Dr Knox. Filled with fixation to get revenge on Knox, Robbie's life takes uncharted dips in it's quality each time he meets Knox.

Can he ever break away from this hate or will he just carry on living this nothing life for the rest of his days?

Fleshmarket is an ideal book for all ages and genders. I found my usually hard to please mum wraped up in the contents of this uplifting book. Dr Knox is a well known figure from our past and also the familularity of the names Burke and Hare give the unpleasant feeling you've ben told this story at the dead of night before.
