Product Description

Flesh and Fury stars OSCAR nominated Tony Curtis (Some Like it Hot, The Defiant Ones, The Great Race) in one of his first leading roles with Golden Globe winner Jan Sterling (The High and the Mighty, Ace in the Hole) and Wallace Ford (Harvey, Spellbound). Director Joseph Pevney (Man of a Thousand Faces) tells the story of deaf mute boxer Paul Callan (Curtis) who starts boxing for $25 purses when he catches the eye of Sonya Bartow (Sterling) a bloodthirsty, money-sucking blonde bombshell. With Sonya keen to push his career (and his winnings!) and with the help of retired fight manager Jack Pop Richardson (Ford), Callan seems all but unstoppable. For a time, Sonya has the upper hand with Paul, until a rival appears in the shape of upper-crust reporter Ann Hollis (Mona Freeman). Assigned to write an article on the hearing-impaired fighter she soon finds herself falling for him. With the women fighting for influence over Paul and ultimately his love, or money in Sonya s case, Paul quickly discovers that getting what he has always wanted doesn t necessarily lead to a happy ending. Available for the first time in this digitally re-mastered form, Flesh and Fury shows its cast in the most flattering light: Tony Curtis is exceptional in one of his first starring roles, and Jan Sterling delivers possibly the finest performance of her career.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid, well done programmer 10 Dec 2010
By The CinemaScope Cat TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
A solid, well done programmer directed by Joseph Pevney (MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES). A young deaf mute (Tony Curtis) who feels alienated because of his deafness in an era when deaf mutes were still cruelly called "dummies" channels his aggressiveness into the boxing ring. A manager (Wallace Ford) with ghosts in his past takes him under his wing as two women, a cold golddigger (Jan Sterling) who exploits him and a news reporter (Mona Freeman) each set their sights on him. Curtis is very effective so early in a career when he was known more for his looks than his talent. There are several disconcerting close ups though when it looks like he's wearing eye make-up! Sterling plays the bitch to perfection and makes a nice contrast to the vapidness of Freeman. The real "stars" of the film though might be Leslie I. Carey and Robert Pritchard, the sound team, who use sound very effectively in taking us into Curtis's soundless world. With Harry Guardino, Connie Gilchrist and Virginia Gregg.

The British DVD via Eureka! is a good B&W transfer in its proper 1.37 ratio.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flesh And Fury - early Tony Curtis! 28 Oct 2010
By Robin
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Flesh And Fury is not a well-known film, mainly because it has rarely been shown on television during the past thirty years. Although an unambitious movie, it deserves to better known because it is well made.

It tells how a deaf and dumb boxer, played by a young Tony Curtis, rises to became welter-weight champion, regains his hearing then loses it again in the ring, and has to chose between two women.

The acting is quite good throughout and praise should be accorded in particular to that most accomplished actress Jan Sterling who once again plays an opportunistic, hard-as-nails floozie and makes her recognisably human. The star of the movie is, of course, Tony Curtis. Here, young and very handsome, he gives a sympathetic performance which makes clear why he became so popular in the early 1950s.

This new DVD from Eureka has excellent picture quality fully up to the high standards of their other DVDs of Universal International films. With the quality so consistently high, it is very much to be hoped that Eureka will release DVDs of several "missing-in-action" Univeral movies like The Unguarded Moment and The Tattered Dress

I echo the praise of the earlier reviewers and wish to add only that this film is so well cast and so superbly crafted, it deflates my anxieties and restores my inner poise after periods of stress. It posesses a deep order and rightness in its construction that rewards multiple viewings long after we're well acquainted with the plot. Jan Sterling portrays the ruthless gold digger with great skill, never running out of acting moves and voice inflections in this major role. Tony Curtis gives a solid and appropriately vulnerable performance. Wallace Ford is a perfect foil and fulcrum point for the foregoing personalities, and the pacing of the film is just right. Since it's not a portrayal of the world of boxing per se, but rather the interplay of the aims of the people surrounding the boxer, this is by no means only "a man's movie". Love of boxing is not a requirement for being fascinated and rewarded.

It's surprising that this film is so little known, but afficiandos of well made 1950s b&w films will find much to savor here.

The visuals are pristine and the sound is fine.
