Product Description

Product Description

An otherwise unknown French village on World War I's Western Front earned a permanent place in military history in 1916 when it became the site of the world's first tank battle. A handful of the newly developed armored vehicles were committed to a Canadian offensive in the area. The Germans were taken by surprise by the armored monsters, but most of the tanks were soon immobilized by their faulty engines, and the tank as a decisive weapon still lay in the future. This detailed and heavily illustrated then-and-now guide to the battle covers the little-known Canadian participation in the action and the present-day Tank Corps Memorial, a place of pilgrimage for tankers of all nations.

A Wonderful Book 4 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The battle of Flers/Courcelette was one of the key battles of the Somme, 1916. Reason being was tanks were used for the first time in battle, and achieved a partial success. This account covers the actions around Flers and Gueudecourt between 15 September and 21 September 1916. It describes the various actions that took place and many of the personalities involved. My only criticism is that the walks are not well covered, certainly not as well covered in other books of the same series which is a pity. The reader may get confused trying to work out what happened and where as he reads the descriptions of the actions. Nevertheless, despite this, there are some good pictures and maps and is a worthy contribution to a remarkable series of battle actions by Pen and Sword books.
