Tormented by his mother's death...

Taken for granted by his father...

Trained in deadly martial arts...

Jason Steed is looking for a place to call home. He finds what he's looking for in the Sea Cadets-an elite group of British youngsters being groomed for lifelong service in the military. But when a routine training exercise goes awry, Jason finds himself in the middle of a secret mission. The future of the world hangs in the balance...and Jason might be the only one who can save it.

"A coming of age heart wrenching story packed with laughs and fast paced action. Most readers who love action and spy fiction will devour this dynamic book in a single sitting or two, otherwise they'll be in extreme agony waiting to see what happens next."

Product Description

"Well constructed, full of adolescent wish-fulfillment and almost believable, this is an undemanding page-turner in the spirit of Alex Rider and Co. that will appeal to parents as well as kids. Let the sequels begin. " - Kirkus

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping Stuff 31 May 2012
I'm writing this review on behalf of my 11 year old daughter, Amber. I gave her this book on a Friday afternoon and by Sunday she'd read it. I have never seen her read so avidly. She wouldn't, couldn't put it down and the moment she finished it her first words were "Daddy, can you get me the next book in the series please?" (ever so polite, isn't she?)

Amber has a list of her favourite ten books in her head, so I asked her where 'Fledgling' came on the list. "It's the best book I've read so far, so it's number one on the list now!"

She loved the characters (especially Jason Steed) and the action. She loved the detail and character building in the early part of the book, which saw Jason growing up. She wept at one point and, when I asked her what was wrong, she said "Nothing. Just this bit's very sad" before burying herself back in it's pages.

Jason Steed inspired her to such an extent that, a week after finishing the book, this unathletic little girl signed up for a karate course. I'd like to thank the author, Mark A. Cooper, for what he has given Amber through his writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ive Started it Now so i have Finish it 10 Sept. 2009
Fledgling by Mark A Cooper :

I have just spent 6 hours reading a book ( the first time for me over 20 years )
that i have picked a book UP & could NOT put it Down till i finished it :

Fledgling :

What i thought of it " Great cause i couldn't put down "

What it's about in my eyes :

To me it was like StormBreaker ( A Young James Bond ) but with a good touch of
Martial Arts training that young kids like todo with added touch of growing as
a teen while at school, wanting to things that most youngsters don't want to or
Not allowed, because their parents think it's to dangerous :

Enter The karate kid like charactors, i found myself reading it like Mr Mewoggi
( prob spelt that wrong sorry ) but you get my drift if you seen the films :

The action is from start to finish full of Happiness, sadness & loads of action between, with Family problems & bonding between family & young school friends etc :

With out giving ANYTHING away as you read to what's going to happen next so it
KEEPS you wondering if Jason will win or survive life :
( oops I'm giving to much away ) you will have to go buy a copy if a Thriller if it's
your thing :

My Final Thoughts on the book :

To me it was like a cross between Stormbreaker, The Karate Kid & ending
on a cliff Hanger like the first The Bourne series ALL rolled into one :

I Just so Hope they Make a Film on this book as it would out do Stormbreaker
by miles in my eyes :

Very well written Mark thank you so much for 6 hours of such enjoyable reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars JASON STEED Book 1 28 Oct. 2008
I thought it had spelling errors but I see its published in the US. Jason grew up pretty fast, this will be a great series. Hint,Hint, where is Book 2. I would like to know what happens next.
The story as I said is fast, Jason Steed is so cool, Its set back in the olden days 1970's and that was nice, no cell phones, Jason goes to the first ever Macdonalds in the UK. The book was different to Alex Rider, more private detail and feelings shown, When Jason was injured and was pushed by his father its very emotional. I would say more to real life, like the Jason Bourne books. I cant wait for the next book or to see if they make a film. The plane scene would be brill.

3.0 out of 5 stars Be careful which edition you read! 12 Jun. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Most of the rave reviews of this book relate to the original self-published edition. It was a bit clunky and needed a little copy-editing, but it was a real "ripping yarn" to use the old phrase and fully justified the reviews. The professionally-published edition of August 2010, and the Kindle edition, has been re-edited quite substantially, and not, I think, for the better - in particular the escape in the B-24 has had a substantial section of the exciting part removed (I'm being deliberately vague here, to avoid spoilers for those who have the first edition). Consequently only 3 stars rather than 4 or 5.
