What if you could stop your heart to simulate a temporary death, and then be revived so you could describe your near-death experience to others? The mysteries of life--and the afterlife--compel five medical students (Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt) to experiment with their own mortality, and what they discover has unsettling psychological implications. That's the intriguing premise of this neo-Gothic horror thriller, directed by Joel Schumacher (Batman & Robin) with his typical indulgence of vibrant colours and hyperactive, hallucinogenic style. The movie borders on silliness at times, and the near-death recollection of memories results in some repetitious scenes, but the dynamic young cast takes it all quite seriously, which is what keeps this gaudy thriller on the edge. The fascinating premise could have been made into a better film, but Schumacher's mainstream excess doesn't stop Flatliners from being slick, occasionally even provocative entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Are you afraid to die? Kiefer Sutherland isn't. He's an ambitious, charismatic medical student who persuades classmates Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon to take part in a reckless experiment. To see if there is life after death, they will kill themselves: temporarily shut down ("flatline") their heartand brain functions to briefly experience clinical death. After Sutherland survives the first experiment, the others flatline for increasingly longer intervals. But their horror begins when they realize that although they've come back alive... they haven't come back alone. Flatliners is a chilling suspense thriller of obsession, fear and redemption that will take you across the line to a place where terror lives forever.

An excellent premise that is beautifully brought to life. This explores aspects of 'life after death' in a postive and frightening way. A great cast, a great story and some brilliant ideas all come together in this film. One for the watching.

This film is a great psychological thriller that keeps you guessing throughout.The cast of KEVIN BACON,KIEFER SUTHERLAND AND JULIA ROBERTS were perfectly selected as the ambitious medical students who go one step too far.The director , JOEL SCHUMACHER, went on to do other great films such as FALLING DOWN and A TIME TO KILL and this movie really set him up as a respectable and talented director.this is a must see movie but is not for the easily shocked.

Well I love Kiefer Sutherland and it was great to see him in action in younger years. Also starring the famous Julia Roberts. Its interesting to watch the young scientists experiment with death, and then theres experience of this "is there an afterlife"? It is definately worth a watch but nothing to rave about...

flatliners flatlined for me
I found this film to be childish and boring. It was bought on the strength of being directed by Harrison Ford. I was very disappointed and would have expected better.

Love this film, classic 80's movie with great characters, i could watch over and over again, just brilliant. its a must have film.

i ordered this dvd at the start of november and still have not recieved it i advice everybody not to buy anything,

Somelines should not be crossed
