Product Description

First published in 1884, Edwin A. Abbott's classic novella is many things: a biting social satire on Victorian society, an exhortation to literally think outside the box (or, if you're a privileged Spacelander, outside the cube), and above all a testament to the universal quest for knowledge and the inherent beauty and purity of mathematical truth. Flatland tells the story of "A SQUARE," a mathematician living in the Second dimension, known as Flatland, whose perceptions of his Universe are turned upside down when he is visited by a Sphere from the Third dimension, known as Spaceland. "A SQUARE" also muses on life in Lineland and Pointland.

The "Deluxe Illustrated E-Reader Edition" of Flatland is the edition you've been waiting for; a beautifully formatted e-reader edition of the classic novella Flatland, including all original illustrations, a table of contents, original footnotes, and bonus footnotes.

"The best introduction one can find into the manner of perceiving dimensions." -- Isaac Asimov.

Great 18 April 2011

This is a compact, insightful and thought-provoking gem which can be appreciated from scientific, mathematical, historical and cultural standpoints. With string theory popularising the concept of higher dimensions today, it's an ideal starting point for those wanting to be able to consider some of the big questions that science is asking. Furthermore, this edition is everything you could want from an ebook. It's formatted perfectly, doesn't forgo the illustrations which are important in a book like this, and is at a fantastic price.

Delightful and thought-provoking little book. Clear and easy to read on the Kindle and it is great to have the illustrations within the text.

Written in 1884, this is most definitely a story of two halves. Told from the point of view of a Square who lives in a two dimensional universe with his straight line wife and hexagonal sons, the first half is a bitingly satirical account of life in the Victorian age.

Coming under the satirical microscope are the Victorian class system, education, the criminal mind, and especially the treatment and expectations of woman. I have to say that even though I was conceptually aware that I was reading a 130 year old satire, I still found myself reading some of it way too literally (especially the almost misogynistic parts that talk about women) and consequently found myself getting quite annoyed at what I was reading.

The second half of this novella though is an absolute gem! Our Square from the first half of the story is visited by a Sphere who first tries to convince the Square of the existence of and then takes him on a journey into three dimensional space. Also visiting the realms of no-dimensional space in Pointland, one dimensional space in Lineland, and exploring the possibility of four, five and more dimensions, the second half of this book is nothing short of brilliant!

Beautifully illustrated with all the author's original illustrations, this Kindle edition is perfectly presented with no errors at all that I could see.

Overall: 4 stars - I can't ignore the fact that I really did dislike some of the first half of this book, but the second half more than made up for it in my opinion. The often expressed concept in the story that the next dimension is so close that you could see it if only you could look in the right direction is very thought provoking stuff indeed!

The tact and skill which suffice to avert a Womans sting are unequal to the task of stopping a Womans mouth; and as the wife has absolutely nothing to say, and absolutely no constraint of wit, sense, or conscience to prevent her from saying it, not a few cynics have been found to aver that they prefer the danger of the death-dealing but inaudible sting to the safe sonorousness of a Womans other end. "e;
