I was loaned a copy of this by a good friend and I spent the whole day in a book trance racing to get to the end of Sonora Blair's adventure. I'm hooked and if you have a serious hankering for some well written crime then you're in for a treat.
Sonora Blair is not your typical crime heroine for one she's a single mother who has an ulcer and posesses no particular specialist skills, unlike Reichs' Temperance or Cornwell's Kay Scapetta. What Sonora Blair does have in spades is bulldog tenacity when it comes to solid policing and catching the killer.
What I admired about this novel in particular are the lovely touches of humour from Sonora especially regarding her kids that lighten, at times, grim crime scenes and emotional turmoil. Unusually Sonora is up against a female serial killer that they have dubbed Flash due to her penchant for trapping her male victims and setting them on alight to burn them to death.
Flash has fixated on Sonora and a tense game of cat and mouse begins as Flash taunts Sonora after she is assigned to investigate Flash's first kill, hinting that the true target is the victim's brother to whom Sonora is greatly attracted. Flash draws closer to Sonora especially when the cop's relationship with Keaton the victim's brother heats up in a most unprofessional manner. Can Sonora track Flash down before those she loves are forced into the hot rage of a killer's sights?
With lovingly drawn secondary characters such as Sam, Sonora's steady partner, the author isn't afraid to take risks with her main character. There are hints of a sexual tension between Sam and Sonora that keep the reader guessing and intrigued to learn more about their relationship.
There are points where I wanted to reach into the book and shake Sonora shouting 'go home to your kids for God's sakes!' but one can't but help feeling sorry for her when she comes back from a hard day wading through gore to have to make cupcakes for her daughters class! 'I can't buy store bought they'll know I cheated mine always come out lumpy and uneven!'
This is a solid entertaining read, my only disappointment was in the ending which seemed a little flat after the frenetic pace of the chase for Flash but I have to admit the end did strike me as more realistic than a lot of crime novels. I felt that there were some points were Sonora didn't show enough emotion especially when her family is brutally targeted but I give this book a four star rating nonetheless because although this first book in the series is a little uneven in places I sense greatness for the series as a whole.
Definitely one to investigate for those who like crime that doesn't look as though it's been put through a cookie cutter!
