5.0 out of 5 stars It all starts here! 20 Feb 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Although I freely admit that you probably need to read other 'World of Flashpoint' sets to fully understand this, it works wonderfully well with the supporting material. That is how it should be judged! If you intend to read this as a standalone piece of material then knock a star off as elements of the narrative will be confusing. Howevever, if you're a die hard fan who wants to understand the prequel story to 'The New 52' then I guarantee you'll want to do a bit more reading anyway. The book itself attempts to get through an awful lot in 5 issues worth of material, and certainly needs a few read throughs to reveal all of its secrets. This is a journey worth taking if you give it a chance.

Would and will read again, you see the deeper emotional sides of characters even as miserable as batman as well as highlighting some heroes normally overlooked.

4.0 out of 5 stars Written in classic DC fashion. 9 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed reading enjoyed Flashpoint, even though the story was quite complex, as I got further into it everything started to become a lot clearer. The storyline is a classic DC alternate universe where Wonderwoman and Aquaman are the villians and Thomas Wayne is Batman instead of his son Bruce. Well worth picking up if you're a fan the DC alternate universe stories as this is a really good one.

When, back in 2011, DC announced it was rebranding their comics line and, save for a few select cases, was going to dismiss over 70 years of continuity, fan reaction was mixed to say the least. Some clamored for the blood of DiDio, Johns and Lee, while others were excited about the prospect of DC Comics taking a more active approach regarding potential new readers (I fell somewhere in between: I wasn't crazy about them taking out the baby with the bathwater, but I understood the necessity of approaching new readers). For that effect, DC concocted Flashpoint, an event penned by Geoff Johns and drawn by Andy Kubert which focused on an entirely different world which resulted from those crazy time-travelling hijinks the speedsters of DC lore have gotten us used to...

So, with all of these responsibilities hanging on it, did Flashpoint succeed? Well, sort of. The main problem with this event is that, for the reader to fully appreciate all that's happening in this alternate timeline, said reader would need a ton of information regarding the story not only of these characters but also of the events which led up to this massive conflict, and most of this information isn't provided by the main story - only by the tie-ins. As such, it may be a bit overwhelming - not to mention out-of-character - for Wonder Woman and Aquaman to engage in a massive World War, Deathstroke to be a wandering pirate and for Cyborg to be the top superhero in this universe. And as if this wasn't bad enough, all throughout the story you'll find these apparently unrelated to the main plot moments featuring characters you may know from the regular DC universe peppered in to both show you that "this ain't yo' daddy's DC universe" and to promote these characters' respective tie-in series.

Really compelling story, great art and fantastic ending! It mixes things up and shows many characters in a new light. One of the best graphic novels I've ever bought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to the Past! 6 July 2012
By j.r
Format:Paperback
Similar to the Back to the Future movies, Flashpoint is a story that focus's on altering the past and creating a different future. I found the book very well written and with excellent art. I'd highly recomend. I haven't read any supporting Flashpoint stories but I still fully understood this book and felt it worked fine as a stand alone story. Flash is the main character, but this is a proper DC event story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh.. 25 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Oh that's a bit harsh,meh..
I think because now the New 52 is all settled in & canon that this book has aged in the space of a year making it a bit redundant.I hadn't read it so needed it but for me it didn't have the impact it should have.It felt like a stepping stone.
Still,upwards & onwards..!
(If you think you need this book to explain the gap between old DCU & New 52,forget it,it's not necessary in that respect,I was none the wiser)

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good 7 Dec 2011
By Ian Williams TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

The graphic novel itself comprises the original 5-issue miniseries, alternate covers, plus a variety of character sketches, with a wraparound image on the book itself which is revealed when you remove the jacket.

The story is quite well done, albeit somewhat compressed. Scenes, sometimes even single panels, refer to events which take place in the range of single issues and three-part miniseries which surround the core narrative. I wasn't actually going to bother with any of these others when they're collected except for the Superman tie-in (I'll explain why later), but now, having actually read the whole core story, I find myself interested enough to want to buy several of the others.

The artwork is good slick stuff by Andy Kubert (one of two comic artist sons of comic artist legend Joe Kubert) in a stylish quasi-realistic super-hero mode being attractive, dynamic and detailed.

Now the story. Barry Allen/The Flash wakes up in a changed world where he isn't the Flash, Batman isn't Bruce Wayne but is prone to kill criminals, Hal Jordan is still a test-pilot, no-one has heard of Superman and the world's great and most trusted super-hero is Cyborg. This, on its own, isn't too bad but, as Barry discovers, things are far worse. Aquaman and his kingdom Atlantis has drowned western Europe and is at war with Wonder Woman (who killed Aquaman's wife) and her Amazons who have conquered the UK, killed millions and castrated male survivors. This war threatens to destroy the world unless the superheroes can band together to stop them. The problem with this is that most super-heroes hate each other.

As I said above, there's an awful lot going so I can't really go into detail without going on for ages and spoiling all the surprises.
