Product Description

Following the popularity of the memoirs of Harry Flashman, the Victorian scoundrel who got himself embroiled in many events of his age, this book introduces a new generation of the family: Thomas Flashman, whose career covers the Napoleonic and Georgian era. This first book covers his adventures with Thomas Cochrane, one of the most extraordinary naval commanders of all time.

From the brothels and gambling dens of London, through political intrigues and espionage, the action moves to the Mediterranean and the real life character of Thomas Cochrane. This book covers the start of Cochrane's career including the most astounding single ship action of the Napoleonic war.

Thomas Flashman provides a unique insight as danger stalks him like a persistent bailiff through a series of adventures that prove history really is stranger than fiction.

Since its first publication, this book has now been professionally edited and proof read to remove any errors. If you enjoy this book the second instalment of Thomas' memoirs is now also available called Flashman and the Cobra.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but watered down Flashman. 9 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a well written and researched book, using the same template of GMF in having his character meeting real life people e.g. Thomas Cocharane and taking part in actual events such as a duel on Malta. This in itself requires skill and a deft touch and this book is a promising start. Set during the Napoleonic wars this book and subsequent ones in this series have a rich vein of history and historical characters to play with. No doubt he'll meet Nelson and Wellington in future books. This particular Flashman is supposedly a forebear of GMF's Harry Flashman, but he's not as much of a coward, bully or poltroon. This watered down Flashman therefore disappoints on that score. As result of political correctness he doesn't treat the natives with as much invective e.g the N word is never used and there's not enough sex. More modern alternatives I've found are "Distant Annihilation" and "Comrade Fox". Most of "Flashman and the Seawolf" is set on ships. There are enough nautical references to give you a feeling of authenticity, without overwhelming the reader with too many sailing terms. The battle scenes are well described and on the whole it's an excellent read and a good page turner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flashman Mark 2? 17 Feb 2013
By B6RKY
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having read GMD's Flashman series more than once over the years I was pleased to see this version appear. If you haven't read GMD make it a must. They are brilliant. It was therefore with a bit of trepidation that I read this. I needn't have worried! Whilst this is not the Harry Flashman we know and love (warts and all)the author does justice to to GMD and the book flows smoothly from one plot to another. It is very entertaining and the highest compliment I can pay it is it can stand alone on its own merit for anyone unaware of the originals. Thomas Flashman is his own man and has quickly moved out of the shadow of his notorious nephew. It is a wonderful first effort, with great attention to detail, some nods to GMD, and some exciting battle scenes. This is the first of the series and I hope the author will write many more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Flashes of what we all came for 5 Mar 2013
By Nelson
Format:Kindle Edition
As with most, I too am looking for an alternative to GMF's Flashman - can it be possible to find?

I have to say though, I enjoyed this novel and there are certainly flashes of what we all came for, but while I understand that Cochrane was quite the fellow, there are contrivences which stretched my credulity at times especially as they relate to positioning Thomas in the story. At the same time, Flashman himself wasn't quite the paltroon that his uncle was, which made what was in fact a very good book ever so slightly disappointing given the reasons for purchase in the first place - much like eating a Burger King and being disappointed that its not MacDonalds.

At time of writing I have bought and read the second book, which I am pleased to say I considered to be even better and Thomas is becoming more his own man... I personally hope that its a series that runs and grows into itself as the historical time it is set in is rich with potential and the character himself really is quite engaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Great stuff! Highly recommended! 12 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well done Robert Brightwell! It's not an easy job following in the footsteps of the great George MacDonald Fraser but what a good job you've made of it. It's important work in my view because it is simply a great way to discover long forgotten aspects of British history. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have just started the secondFlashman and the Cobra and I really do hope you continue writing Flashman stories for many years to come. I shall certainly be reading them all and recommending them to my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as good as the original 8 Nov 2012
By Neil
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have been a devotee of he original Flashman books and was pleased that Amazon recommendations put this forward to me. I bought it without much hope but was delighted with it. I think that this book is at least as good as the original books. It kept me absorbed right to the end. I will definitely be buying the next in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not George, but not a bad effort 26 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
If you have read the real Flashman books you'll have a reasonable idea of what to expect. We are in the Napoleonic wars, at sea in this book, Our hero is slightly less of a rogue than the MacDonald Fraser's version he still captures some of the mood of the his books an excellent read and his description of Cochrane's exploits in the Royal Navy is pretty accurate, Cochrane was made for a book like this, his exploits sound like something from a boys own comic, and yet he really did this stuff, good book, not as good as the originals but ...

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read 2 Oct 2012
By Downing
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Very impressed with this novel. The historical research was first class and the story was well constructed.I liked the fact that the author has created a different type of Flashman (one not as cowardly or randy, but more believable). My only gripe was that there were a lot of nautical terms in this book which to the landlubber went over the head a bit,but nevertheless very enjoyable and well done indeed!
