Product Description

Product Description

Eighteen-year-old Kali McAlister enters her steam-powered "dogless sled" in a race, intending to win the thousand-dollar prize and escape remote Moose Hollow forever. The problem? Fortune seekers and airship pirates are after her for the secret to flash gold, her late father's alchemical masterpiece.

With her modified rifle and a pocketful of home-made smoke bombs, Kali wouldn't normally hide from a confrontation, but taking on a whole airship single-handedly is a daunting task. Unfortunately, the other racers won't assist her--they're too busy scheming ways to sabotage her unorthodox sled.

When a sword-slinging stranger shows up, wanting to hire on as her protector, she's sure he has ulterior motives, but he's the only one interested in helping her. The question is...why?

An 18,000-word (80 page) novella

I am reviewing Flash Gold and Hunted together, as they're both so short and follow directly one after the other.

They are both delightfully silly, set in an alternate version of the Yukon during the gold rush of the 1890s. Alchemy and a small amount of magic work in this reality, and are used by the protagonist to power machines - and are very much desired by her enemies. At the time of writing, you can buy both for under a pound, and given how cheap they are (the first being not just cheap but free!) and how enjoyable, we can completely ignore what weaknesses they have. Buroker is another of those very promising authors who I wouldn't have discovered without the Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flash Gold 3 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It is always an adventure buying into a new author - new to the reader - I have been disappointed before buying a new author. However I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Lindsay's adventures of Kali and look forward to further adventures to come. Both main characters have depth and strength that deserve developing and Lindsay has a great writing style, use of language and ability to create a story that holds the reader and leaves the reader wanting more. Just open the book and read a few pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Metal constructions and wonderous inventions 30 Nov 2011

This was a first for me, as I have never read so called steam punk before. Images of metal constructions and wonderous inventions come to mind after reading it. I thought it was a combination of adventure meets futuristic vision. The main character Kali is an extremely talented inventor/engineer, which has earnt her the reputation of witchcraft, which is how most people explain things they don't understand. Very good read.
