Basic Skim Over 19 Sep 2010
By Kurt D. Fillmore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Not quite what I was looking for. Flash (initially from Macromedia and later from Adobe Systems) is used quite a bit to create animations for web, television, corporate, and film. Unfortunately most of the focus of Flash training seems to be about scripting and interactivity, not the actual process of animation. This book was the recommended text for a motion graphics course I'm taking, however, it really doesn't go into detail as to best practices for animating in flash. Instead it sort of skims across many, many subjects in a very shallow manner. Of course that's what the book claims 'to get you up and running quickly'. Probably should have chosen something else.

Not your best choice to learn Flash with 27 Feb 2011
By J. Barno - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is the required text for my computer animation class, it was chosen by my professor "because its cheap." I have found this book extremely difficult to read, the writing is so dry I can't read more than four pages at a time without dozing off. Many of the examples in the book don't explain why you should, or should not use a particular tool. The 'Visual" examples are in black and white, not the best way to inspire design and animation students. My biggest problem with this book though is that the author only gives you the keyboard shortcuts once, when you are introduced to each action or tool.

Because of my frustration with this book, I decided to also purchase the How to Cheat in Flash book. The How to Cheat book has none of the issues that I had with the the VQSG book. I now use both of these books, to get a deeper understanding of what I am doing in Flash.

Not a great updated book to past versions 23 Nov 2010
By Lauren Winiker Kaplan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had been living and breathing by Flash CS3 Professional Advanced by Chun, a past version of this book. It was a great tool - it went into actionscriot examples and visual tutorials to do intermediate coding and animation. Basically it assumes you know Flash already. When I upgraded to CS5, I wanted an updated copy so that it would talk to the revised interface and new features. I purchased this book, thinking it would be just that, but I was disappointed. It assumes you know NOTHING about flash and takes you through the basics of how to create a shape or make a motion tween. Instead of giving the reader practical generic visual examples like in the CS3 book, it takes you through exercises with fake examples. I found that these were not as quick of a visual read.

If you are just starting out with Flash in general and need a good explanation of the program and it's features, this is a useful book. If you know the program and wanted a reference book that is up-to-date with the latest version of the software, I would look elsewhere.
