not as good as previous 7 Jun 2000
By Joe G. Steinbrunner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book was not as good as his previous two, partially because his main character was a fighter pilot and since Huston was also a pilot he had way too much fighter pilot filler in the book and missed doing an interesting story. I would have prefered Ricketts (a spy like Clancy's Clark) to be the main character or even Sami and to have resolved more of the Israeli behind the scenes involvement which was setup but never finished and more on the reasons and plans of the bad guys; instead we had more plane and helicopter fighting. If you are into planes and shoot them up, it is a good read, but I would not recomend it to serious readers.

This book is great, Its amazing that this book was written before 9/11 this has some very very chilling events that have become true today. Great all around book and always keeps you flipping the pages.

A strangely prophetic thriller 4 Nov 2001
By Mark - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I'm sure that when James W. Huston sat down to write Flash Point, he wanted to create a plausible scenario for a novelized "Top Gun." Little did he know that the resulting story would be a small-scale version of September 11th and its aftermath.

Flash Point is the story of a Naval aviator who sees his friend die in a terrorist attack in the middle east. He then partakes in an international incident that leads to war with the terrorist group.

The book is a good and realistic look at the lives of naval aviators. The reader is quickly drawn into the cockpit and shot off the catapult into an excitng tale of both revenge and self-doubt.

Huston also follows the activities within the CIA, as well as the dichotomy between devout Muslims and hypocritical terrorists, with the character of Sami, the Syrian-born analyst. He also creates suspense by calling into question the loyalty of Israeli inteligence during the operation against the elusive terrorist leader, known only as "the Sheik."

The biggest flaw in the book's story comes from differences between this work of fiction and real life. I doubt that the US would go to war over a minor terrorist attack and a furball. I just hope that the real story ends with a happy ending.
