Product Description

Eighteen-year-old Kali McAlister enters her steam-powered "dogless sled" in a race, intending to win the thousand-dollar prize and escape remote Moose Hollow forever. The problem? Fortune seekers and airship pirates are after her for the secret to flash gold, her late father's alchemical masterpiece.

With her modified rifle and a pocketful of home-made smoke bombs, Kali wouldn't normally hide from a confrontation, but taking on a whole airship single-handedly is a daunting task. Unfortunately, the other racers won't assist her--they're too busy scheming ways to sabotage her unorthodox sled.

When a sword-slinging stranger shows up, wanting to hire on as her protector, she's sure he has ulterior motives, but he's the only one interested in helping her. The question is...why?

An 18,000-word (80 page) novella

I am reviewing Flash Gold and Hunted together, as they're both so short and follow directly one after the other.

They are both delightfully silly, set in an alternate version of the Yukon during the gold rush of the 1890s. Alchemy and a small amount of magic work in this reality, and are used by the protagonist to power machines - and are very much desired by her enemies. At the time of writing, you can buy both for under a pound, and given how cheap they are (the first being not just cheap but free!) and how enjoyable, we can completely ignore what weaknesses they have. Buroker is another of those very promising authors who I wouldn't have discovered without the Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flash Gold 3 Jan 2012
By clive
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It is always an adventure buying into a new author - new to the reader - I have been disappointed before buying a new author. However I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Lindsay's adventures of Kali and look forward to further adventures to come. Both main characters have depth and strength that deserve developing and Lindsay has a great writing style, use of language and ability to create a story that holds the reader and leaves the reader wanting more. Just open the book and read a few pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Metal constructions and wonderous inventions 30 Nov 2011
By Cheryl M-M TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a first for me, as I have never read so called steam punk before. Images of metal constructions and wonderous inventions come to mind after reading it. I thought it was a combination of adventure meets futuristic vision. The main character Kali is an extremely talented inventor/engineer, which has earnt her the reputation of witchcraft, which is how most people explain things they don't understand. Very good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steampunk belongs in the Yukon! 14 April 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Flash Gold is a great short steam punk story that takes place in the Yukon. This story is pretty typical of a Lindsay Buroker story with fantastic dialogue and a fast paced plot. They story follows a young woman who is trying to win a dog race to get money to move away and Cedar the man who agrees to work for her for a cut of the prize money. Using a steam powered sled of her own design Kali and Cedar do not have much luck. Along the way they are attacked by bandits and the other racers. Kali has some extremely unique weapons that she uses in the skirmishes to pull them through.

I am a huge fan of Lindsay Buroker's work and will continue to read what she writes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Gold for Lindsay Buroker 9 Jun 2012
By Annie W
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having just devoured her "Emperor's Edge" series, I couldn't resist downloading "Flash Gold" today, and have already gone on to buy volumes 2 and 3. A newcomer to steampunk, I find it fascinating, and Lindsay Buroker is an excellent author, whose descriptions and characterisations draw the reader straight into the story. While I have reservations about the 21st century political correctness that makes the independent Kali of rough, tough, gold-rush country unwilling to shoot to kill when outnumbered by dangerous, gun-firing enemies happily firing a myriad of weapons at her, the book is otherwise a delight, and I look forward to more books in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable steampunk novella 29 Jan 2012
By Kanga
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded this initially because it was free, and I enjoy steampunk as a genre. I wasn't disappointed, in fact I enjoyed it so much I bought everything else that Lindsay Buroker has written and loved it all. I am now impatiently waiting for her next published work, whether it is in the Emperor's Edge series, or the Flash Gold series.

Kali is an appealing heroine, slightly unsure of herself based on other's opinions, but determined to prove herself and her skills in the sled race. She is a sympathetic character, one I have enjoyed getting to know over both Flash Gold and Hunted, as for Cedar, well...definitely a worthy partner for Kali.

I would recommend this book to both young adults and adults alike, I think a good author is worth reading regardless of their supposed target audience, in fact some young adult authors are better writers than specifically adult authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - my first steampunk read 16 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Great dialogue, two memorable main protagonists with an interesting romantic relationship developing between them. I loved the snowy Yukon setting - in a fledgling alternative Canada - with its newly-invented steampunk engines and intriguing mechanical devices. The story chugs along at a quick pace, which helps to make it a real page turner.

A wonderful start to a new series, then. Highly recommended.

p.s. There are no dragons or fairies, here. Someone has been adding misleading tags to this reviews page. No ancient mythology involved, either [don't believe those tags.]
