It brings together his most famous stories, including 'The Diamond as Big as the Ritz', a fairy tale of unlimited wealth; the sad and hilarious stories of Hollywood hack Pat Hobby; and 'The Lost Decade', written in Fitzgerald's last years.
About the Author
F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in St Paul, Minnesota, and went to Princeton University which he left in 1917 to join the army. Fitzgerald was said to have epitomised the Jazz Age, an age inhabited by a generation he defined as 'grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken'. In 1920 he married Zelda Sayre. Their destructive relationship and her subsequent mental breakdowns became a major influence on his writing. Among his publications were five novels, This Side of Paradise, The Great Gatsby, The Beautiful and Damned, Tender is the Night and The Love of the Last Tycoon. Fitzgerald died suddenly in 1940.

This includes all the most famous stories, including "The Diamond as big as the Ritz" and a whole series of Pat Hobbie tales, describing the bleak, but blackly humourous adventures of a fading movie script writer. Some are poignant, about lost young love, like "Three hours between planes", others like "The Baby Party" and "Bernice bobs her hair" draw on Scott Fitzgerald's amazing perceptiveness about the darkness of female human nature. This book shows the breadth of his observations, and the need to make these commercial in order to pay for his and Zelda's hedonistic lifestyle. The reader learns a lot about their own vanities and insecurities, but always emerges in awe of this genius writer.

'Diamond as Big as The Ritz' was the first Fitzgerald I read and it leads this colection. A great place to start if you havn't read anything by the author before. Like a Bond film - there's action; a villainous millionaire who's hide out is in a mountain, in a country on no map; and the hero runs off with the girl. With the characteristic grace and insightfullness seen in 'The Great Gatsby', 'Beautiful and Damned', 'Tender is the Night' F.Scott offers a witty insight into the devestating effects of wealth. A theme which he mastered in his latter works.

This collection shows Fitzgerald to be one of the very best short story writers, up there with Hemmingway and Dahl.
Fitzgerald didn't quite manage to write the ultimate American Novel with Tender is the Night, he may have got there with The Last Tycoon if he had lived long enough to finish it, but his short stories, along with his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, ensure his longevity in the ranks of the best American authors of all time.
It's been seven years since I read this, and I can't remember a clear favourite - 'Mayday' was truly awesome, though.

Brilliant
If you have not read Fitzgerald then quite simply you should. If nothing else, read the Great Gatsby. Also read Richard Yates (Revolutionary Road). Read more
