I picked this book because I thought it would be a good trashy no-brainer, having just finished a heavy political biog.
Admittedly, it's escapist, and romantic, but I was surprised by how well written the story was, how developed the characters were, and how well the era and sense of place were established. It had me hooked from page one.
It's a cliched story - which of us didn't have a crush on a teacher when in school? But Jacqui Gordon fleshes it out sufficiently so that while it's a good, gripping romance, we see the relationship develop and blossom in a very realistic way.
Charlotte and Brian make for intriguing, sympathetic, and well-rounded characters. You can understand why they would genuinely fall in love.
Topping it all off, the book generates the right amount of chemistry and romantic tension. You're just dying for them to get together, and she delivers a good denouement - worthy of the build-up.
I can't give it 5 stars, because although overall I liked the ending, I couldn't help but feel it was a little drawn-out, and hence got a little flat before the final page.
Nonetheless, a good book. I'm surprised it didn't do better.
