Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Little known gems from the King. 1 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
When you think of Elvis you think of some of the great songs of the 20th century.Heartbreak Hotel,King Creole,Jailhouse Rock...the list is endless. However you could spend many years finding and listening to some of his less well known songs. These songs do not always get much radio play but they are evidence ,if any is needed,of the great mans ability to make a song come truly alive and make the song an intensely personal experience for the listener. This album has some minor classics indeed.Flaming Star is a very good film and although the title song is a trifle obvious in terms of lyrics and style it is a real toe tapper that stays in your head and a great one for singing along to in the car!I liked all of the songs for the range that they demonstrated in terms of Elvis's voice. However my favourite has got to be Summer kisses, winter tears. The lyrics are strong, intense and the controlled power of Elvis's voice is wonderful to hear.I can listen to that song several times a day without tiring of it.How can I give an album by Elvis any less than 5 stars?

4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag 17 July 2004
Format:Audio CD
A mixed album, as you'd expect from an album that combines 3 totally different sets of songs from 3 totally different types of films.

The output from Flaming Star is not particularly interesting, while it may be a better Elvis film, the music doesn't live up to the film. "Summer Kisses" is a decent effort, but you get very tiered of "Flaming Star" after 3 versions! I give it two starts - **.

Things get better with Wild In the Country. "In My Way", "Forget Me Never", "Lonely Man" and the title song are good acoustic efforts. Then there's the excellent "I Slipped", which we're even given a radically different version of!. Well worth listening to. I give it four starts - ****.

But the sound track to "Follow That Dream" is excellent, and finishes the collection off nicely. "What A Wonderful Life" is one of the best songs of the period, the title song, "Sound Advice", "I'm Not The Marrying Kind" and "A Whistling Tune" (better than the version of "Kid Galahad") are great little pop songs, and the ballad "Angel" rounds things off nicely. - ****

4.0 out of 5 stars Three of the Better Ones 18 Feb 2005
By Eclectic Revisited - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Judge "Wild in the Country" on your own where Elvis is involved with 3 women (but it was the early 60s so no big deal). They should have noted that "Lonely Man" on this package was cut from the film. It was a hit single however and the movie clip appeared at a special Elvis event in Las Vegas years later. Over the years various critics have given Elvis high marks for his acting chops in "Flaming Star" and "Follow That Dream", perhaps because the scripts were better than usual. Elvis is effective as the not-too-bright peace officer of the peapatch territory he and his family have homesteaded for themselves and no Presley film surpasses the obligatory sing-his-girl-a-romantic-song as when he sings "Angel" to the lovely-from-head-to-toe Anne Helm. It's always been my favorite. The other songs are more-than-usual memorable too. In "Flaming Star" (almost called "Black Star") you forget Elvis' unlikely blue eyes as he effectively plays a half-breed Injun with seasoned actress Dolores del Rio as family and rides awkwardly into the sunset. (They shoulda given him a different horse). This package though is worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Elvis tunes 1 Jan 2002
By Gerald R. Boothe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Three Elvis movies with great songs on all three. Flaming Star has some songs that really show off Elvis' early talents as does Wild In The Country. Follow that Dream is my favorite with every song a hit. This CD has to be in your collection, if not, get it. You will not be dissapointed if your an Elvis fan like myself. Of course if your an Elvis fan, you would already know these songs from other albums, thats what makes this triple feature so great all in one CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the "Follow That Dream" tracks 26 April 2003
By jon sieruga - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
"Angel" is a stirring, haunting ballad, "Follow That Dream" and "What a Wonderful Life" are jubiliant and the outtake "Whistling Tune" is very nice. Those are all near the end of this uneven CD that concentrates on unreleased material(that stayed unreleased many years for fairly good reasons). "I Slipped, I Stumbled, I Fell"(two versions!)from "Wild in the Country" is a nice one to own, but the rest of the tracks are more interesting on a historical-Elvis level than as a good listening experience.
