Product Description

CD Description

Lasairfhíona has become one of Ireland’s best known singers. A singer/songwriter, deeply rooted in the sean-nós singing style of her home on Inishere, Aran Islands, she is also influenced by a broad range of contemporary music. On her new album, FLAME OF WINE (a literal translation of her own name) Lasairfhíona conjures up a stirring mixture of song and music in her own individual style.

This Lives. 6 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
If you are interested in Lasairfhiona, let me try

to write some words that you might not have already

read several times.

First, the production and accompaniment on this CD

are truly exceptional. The acoustics are rich, the

tones are crystal clear and diamond-like. I'd *love*

to visit the hall they recorded this in. Guitar,

whistle, piano, percussion, and above all, viola,

each is played at times with others, at times alone.

Each instrument has a voice, and each is given a

place on stage with Lasairfhiona. None are played

for speed, and above all, none are made to "sound

like her." You get a gentle voice, and instruments

that sound etched in echoing crystal.

Second, the means by which music lovers discover CDs

like this is desperately thin. This CD is copyright

2005, yet I would never have heard of it without a

review in The Living Tradition in 2007, for which I

am *very* grateful. The reviewer himself remarked on

this problem.

Third, if a comparison to any other artist piques

your interest, good. Otherwise, well, I choose not

to make comparisons. I can't imagine confusing any

track on this CD with any other track I've ever heard.

Lastly, I want to try to connect my second and third

points above. Bluntly, I think traditional artists

should spend more time listening to their peers, and

speak out about what they like. I bought 10 other CDs

with this one. I can only do that once or twice a year.

It's an act of desperation, and only sometimes effectual.

But I could have been rejoicing in this CD for the past

18 months, months that will never return, not in this world.

Beautiful. 24 Nov 2008

Great musicality!
This young lady sings with such ease and joy.
No electronic trickery and cheating here!
It is so pleasant to have my ears gently caressed by beautiful melodies rather than harsh squawks, squeals, screams and the various racous cacophonies that pass for music in some places.

Excellent, daring and ultimately sucessful.. 1 Aug 2011
By Dionys Murphy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lasairfhíona (Ní Chonaola) is, to be quite frank, one of the best Sean Nós singers in Ireland today. Her first album, An Raicín Álainn (The Beautiful Comb), was easily one of the best Sean Nós albums in years with tasteful accompanying instruments and voices. She did not fall victim to the Enya-esque synth-pop pads or stray into the 'Celtic Women' pablum that so many Irish albums do. No watered-down tripe there.

Flame of Wine is just enough of a departure from An Raicín Álainn to be daring, but not so much that the tradition of Sean Nós is disgraced. Those who loved her previous work will instantly love a number of the tracks on Flame of Wine and will most certainly grow to love the tracks where she took a bit (or more than) of a chance in straying outside orthodox performance.

As with her previous work, her Irish, voice, timbre, timing, range, et cetera are impeccable. Moreover you can feel the importance, emotion and devotion she puts into her singing. It is not a matter of technical perfection, but that additional ounce of grace that makes this album (and her others) a must have.
