5.0 out of 5 stars This "Flame" is a Scorcher, 3 May 2001
By Brian D. Rubendall - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Flame (Audio CD)
All of the promise The Mary Janes shoed on their first album "Record No. 1" has been delivered with their sophomore effort, "Flame." Lead singer and songwriter Janas Holt is a talent who would ready for the big time if rock radio had the slightest bit of imagination. Holt is a former member of The Vulgar Boatmen, another criminally overlooked band than wrote great jangly guitar rock. The Mary Janes sound has been described as Hank Williams meets the Velvet Underground, but that's a superficial description. The band adds a lot of violin and pedal steel, but the result sounds not at all like traditional country music.

Two of the best songs on the record, "Telescope" and "Better Way" are pop gems that have been floating around on the Internet for awhile. Other standout tracks include the amazing "Be Careful," the lengthy accoustic number "Downtown," the opening track "Junie Moon," and an ace Tom Petty cover "Free Girl Now," that exceeds the original. The Mary Janes deserve a larger audience. Take a chance and give them what they deserve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flame burns with passion., 17 May 2001
By david - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Flame (Audio CD)
Flame is a passionate follow-up to the band's critically acclaimed debut, Record No. 1. These new songs find lead Mary Jane Janas Hoyt securing hope despite harrowing life experiences. The album arcs from the joyful "Junie Moon", through the brutal twin tales of abuse and betrayal in "Bruises and Breaks" and "Subtract the Night" and finally comes full circle with a full-on cover of Tom Petty's "Free Girl Now" that finds Hoyt boldly declaring a certain kind of freedom from, and victory over, her demons.

Ms. Hoyt is most noticeably joined on the recording by violinists and pedal steel guitar. Both dueling string parts and prominent pedal steel give the music a rootsy feel in the vein of Lucinda Williams and Whiskeytown, but in this instance, comparisons don't tell the whole story.

This is an album well worth the 60 minute sit it requires to take it all in.
