I hadn't heard of John Lutz so took a chance here with FLAME, which is not the first novel in his Fred Carver mysteries.

Fred is a former policeman who is a now a private detective. He was shot on duty and now walks with a limp and cane. In this story, Fred is approached by a man who has been asked to impersonate somebody for good reward but is murdered shortly thereafter. Fred decides to uncover the circumstances of the engagement anyway.

The opening is great and has the reader hooked. There is quite a lot of filler material in this novel, but it still manages to move along quite well. There isn't a great deal of complexity, but there are a couple of smaller twists and turns as the story develops. Fred is a likeable protagonist but we don't learn too much about some of the other characters in the book - in fact, I felt there were quite a few issues left open, so I assume these got dealt with in the sequels.

This is not a sensational novel but it is an easy and enjoyable read. There was certainly enough there for me to look out for other Lutz novels.

Thankfully, my Kindle version did not have typo or formatting problems either.

An engaging private eye novel 26 Nov 2007
By M. C. Crammer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I don't know if you could really call this a mystery -- more of a thriller. The plot involves an ex-cop-with-a-limp private detective who is hired by an older man to find out why this man has been hired to impersonate someone else. Very quickly, our private detective finds himself under pressure from a lot of different directions, including criminals, government agents, and crooked cops. Although any sane person would have walked away from the situation early on, our detective (for reasons he claims are ethical concerns) continues to investigate, despite the threats to him and his girlfriend. He says it's for ethical reasons, but I personally think getting your girlfriend massacred is hardly ethical.

But Lutz is a good story teller and writes well, so you keep turning the pages.

I think this is really more of a guy's thriller, and I prefer mysteries to thrillers, so I can only give this four stars.

This was just a carbon copy of the last book I read by this author. Nothing but a bunch of words.
Really Enjoyed This! 20 Dec 2011

Fred Carver isn't your typical Adonis private eye, maybe that's why I enjoy this series so much? He's human, the kind of person you'd like to drink a beer with. John Lutz does a wonderful job at drawing the reader into Fred Carver's world, I found myself laughing out loud, cringing, and wishing that the book wouldn't end. I've read all the books in this series, if you start with the first there is a lot of background information that (gratefully) isn't repeated in subsequent books.
