Product Description

Album Description

Many people will know the name Bill Bruford from his widespread and varied career playing for bands such as Yes or King Crimson or perhaps many of the sessions Bill has managed to notch up over the years, most notably for Genesis for whom he briefly drummed alongside Phil Collins when Phil took over the vocalists spot vacated by Peter Gabriel. These days Bill fronts the jazz quartet Earthworks and in addition to playing the odd session Bill seems more than happy playing dates as far afield as Japan and South America to enthusiastic jazz audiences and music lovers in general.

Patrick Moraz also has a wide and varied career behind him including stints with Mainhorse, Refugee, The Moody Blues and more importantly Yes. Patrick has also released many diverse albums ranging from concept albums through to music with a Brazilian feel and more importantly jazz. In fact it was a love of jazz which no doubt sowed the seeds of the Bruford/Moraz musical partnership.

Although neither Bill or Patrick played together at the same time in Yes both musicians have a great love and more importantly an understanding of Jazz and these talents are heard to great effect on the album Flags. Originally released in 1985 following Moraz's split from the moody Blues and a period when King Crimson was in hibernation Bruford and Moraz turn in a stellar performance on an album of original material written either by Patrick Moraz or written by both Moraz and Bruford. There is however one cover and that is the Max Roach composition The Drum Also Waltzes.

The album was originally released on EG Records in the mid eighties however this re released version will now appear as the debut release on the Wimterfold imprint. Winterfold has been formed to release the albums Bill Bruford recorded with his band Bruford in the late seventies and early eighties and also the albums Bill recorded with Patrick Moraz. The album will be re mastered for re release and will be one of many future releases on the Winterfold label.

Not much to recommend. 27 Dec 2005

SECOND DISC IS A BRUFORD INFORMERCIAL

Flags was originally released in 1985 as an LP and CD. It was 40 minutes long. This new release has 3 live tracks added, bringing it up to around 70 minutes. There is a second disc, which is an infomercial from Bruford.

The music on what was side A of the LP, is silly little pieces. Some of it sounds like what you would hear in a circus and others might come from Western movie. It is all inconsequential stuff. It is all piano and drums. It is something that might be played a children's concert.

Side B gets a little more interesting, with nice drum solos from Bruford and nice piano solos from Moraz. It ends with a very nice 6 minute piano/drum duet. The music hear, is more along the lines of fusion or discordant jazz.

The last third of the CD is the live bonus material from a complete band. It starts out with a very good jazz piece. But, that is the only very good piece. The next track, Childrens' Concerto is just that and sounds a lot like what was on "Side A". The last track is a drawn out piano piece.

The bonus CD is about 70 minutes long. It contains 8 pieces of music with a fake interview done inbetween the pieces. There is a guy interviewing Bruford, but you can tell that Bruford wrote the questions. It is just like an Infomercial, with Bruford selling the work of his Earthworks band, and some new material.

There was a time! 9 Dec 2008

In response to the previous review!

Here is the musician's review. If you ever liked Patrick or Bill and you want to upgrade to get the bonus track and don't already have the CD BUY IT NOW!

Some Tracks are a sampling of a time when Digital Keyboards were breakthrough (The Kurzwiel) and Drummers were toying with A new thing called a "Digital Drum". Not all the track were digital drums but the Bruford fans already know Mr. Bill!

This is a prime example of getting to know a keyboardist getting his proverbial rocks off on a new great keyboard of the time and showing his mastery of the keyboards! He does play a Real Grand too!

I think the previous reviewer was being a tad unfair.

First he made the mistake of presuming something that he doesn't know and if this is a reproduction by Bruford to sell CD's LET HIM!

This shouldn't be a morality question! Just the fact that they included bonus tracks makes up for the fact that we may have to listen to a commercial (if it was even a fake interview)

On the grounds that the music may be simplistic and carnival is missing the point. Just point out it "me it wasn't my taste".

I saw the duet live that many years ago in Milwaukee and I was more excited seeing the two of them then poor Miles the same year!

'nuff said. Support your global musicians too! Buy this CD I will end up buying it again in honer of all those that didn't because of the above review.
Because of my sophomoric rant I will not go track by track and point out the virtues.
