Fjelltronen "The Mountainthrone", is the solo project of Satyr of Satyricon (with some aid from ihsahn). But this is not Satyricon, nor is this black metal. It is as Isengard is to Fenriz and thus, this is Satyr's folk vision.
Mainly using synths and acoustic guitars, this album sounds and creates an atmosphere like that of the mists passing around the fjords that satyr must have been inspired by. very dreamy textures are simulated by garm/ulver/monk style chants along with flutes, piano and strings (not to mention the howling wind and wolves of the background).
Although (or maybe because) this album is wonderfully gentle, it takes time to appreciate- dont expect catchy rif-o-rama.
it is great music to sleep to as it is this almost fairy-tale myticism which makes this album enchanting.
there are 5 songs, one 16 minutes long, the others about 4 mins.
This is a one off from satyr, and music of this calibre is rare.....fans of Empyrium, Opeth, Fenriz, Ulver, Tenhi should all grace your ears with such sweet music....

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathless... 24 July 2008
Format:Audio CD
This album is pure genious, plain and simple, its' not a matter of taste, just a refreshing experiance through the dark underworld of Satyr. I reccomend this album to more than just the black metal culture, but anyone interested in the dark ambient/medival genre. To get an enhanced experiance while listning to Wongraven, turn the lights down, grab a beer and listen deep.
10/10

4.0 out of 5 stars A few things you should know about 'Fjelltronen' 13 Jan 2010
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
The adjectives Satyr uses to decribe this album in the liner notes are 'dreaming', 'tragic', 'misanthropic', 'beautiful' and 'uplifting'. I don't really think a review can do better than those adjectives, and despite what shallow souls would see as contradiction ("tragic AND uplifting") they convey the essence of the music perfectly. 'Fjelltronen' exists in a deeper realm the shallow will never comprehend.

Worth purchasing for the epic first piece alone ('Det var en gang et menneske'), this is indeed pure northern atmosphere music, perfectly complemented by the Kittelsen art which accompanies it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric music.. 6 April 2003
By en norsk kis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This piece realy gets you dreaming back to the norse past.
The first track "Det var engang et menneske" is a 16 minute long track that will make the time stop. Well actually, the whole album will do that.
Your mind will go on a journey through mighty forests and endless mountains. When it suddenly stops you will be wanting much more, so it's too bad Sigurd Wongraven only made one album of this kind.
If you like atmospheric stuff like old Mortiis you will praise this album. TRUST ME!
And remember, the journey should procced on high volume...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the forgotten realm 2 Jan 2003
By Grimnir - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
"Fjelltronen" is basically an extension of "I en Svart Kiste" from Satyricon's (Sigurd Wongraven's full-time band) excellent 1994 album "The Shadowthrone". The music is dark and hauntingly beautiful and majestic with a strong medieval atmosphere. Isahn (of Emperor and Thou Shalt Suffer) plays most of the synth parts and wrote the second track, but unlike some of the synth parts in later Emperor songs they are not showy or overbrearing - more flowing and hypnotic (along the lines of Mortiis' "Fodt til aa Herske"). This is not a Black metaL album, so there are no blastbeats or raspy vo-kills. Pecussion (provided by Hans Sorensen - not Frost)is mostly tympanni and bells and Satyr's vocals are whispers and choirs spoken in Norsk.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest Medieval Folk albums ever done 4 Sep 2008
By Nocturnal Vinnie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
WOW what can i say about this album & this side project by the mastermind of Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven of Satyricon, & special guest pianist Ihsahn of Emperor.

This is an amazing beautiful album to listen to over & over it has that dark medieval folk sound to it that you will just love when you listen to this album.

I definitely recommend buying this album as it is just one of a kind out there & i am very happy to own a copy of this great album.

To bad this side project only lasted 1 album since 95, i just hope that Satyr will make another great album like this one soon..
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Northern European Atmosphere... 4 Oct 2004
By david - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Upon repeated listens this record dispenses beautiful atmposphere like few others of similar theme. Time and space become irrelevant. Minimilistic music that paints pictures of medieval northern landscapes in your mind...
