The book is well set-out and the introductory chapter tells you how much is one portion of fruit and/ or vegetables. (One star awarded for this!) Armed with this knowledge, I set out to increase my fruit and veg. consumption..........

However, many of the recipes included are, unless you are a complete beginner, pretty much well known and hardly improve on one's intake of fruit and vegetables. I also presumed that the number of portions of fruit/ vegetables per serving of each recipe would be given, (not unlike calorie-counted recipes) but one is left to work this out for oneself. I found out why......

For example, included is a recipe for lemon meringue pie, which is not exactly going to increase one's fruit consumption. The pie serves six and contains.............the juice and rind of one lemon. (Not to mention enough sugar and fat to kill a small elephant) Eating all 6 slices would barely give you enough fruit for one portion of your daily five!!! Many other fruit recipes are similar.....if you look at the fruit content of the recipe and divide it by the number of servings, some recipes contain VERY little fruit and one portion of the recipe doesn't equal even ONE portion of fruit! The vegetable recipes are better in this respect, but some are very high in fat. These recipes do include a caveat about high fat content, but to increase fat consumption alongside fruit/ veg. consumption is hardly a health recommendation!

The authors provide lots of interesting information about types of fruit and vegetables, (two stars!) but I was looking for healthy-eating recipes to enable me to eat more fruit and veg.

This book CERTAINLY can't be judged by its misleading cover.........there's more fruit on THAT than in some of the recipes!! I feel I wasted my money.

I am really quite impressed with this book. The photographs make the food look appetising and I'm sure even the most adamant of reluctant vegetable eaters will be tempted to try something!! The book is divided into sections ie root vegetables and an introduction at each section leads you into the recipes. Well worth a look at for the new and seasoned cook.

Not the healthy book I was looking for... 9 Feb 2011
By Charlotte - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book is certainly lovely and photographed well. The introductions at the beginning of each section outline the fruit or vegetable type, (i.e. stone fruits, root vegetables) then give a brief description of the item and how it can be used. Then comes a section of recipes using those items.

However, most of the recipes put fruit into tarts, pastries and pies and load them up with cream and sugar, while most of the vegetable recipes have the veggies hidden under cheese, cream, doughs and stuffed in turnovers and tarts. I was looking for a daily healthy option for different fruits and vegetables, but most of these recipes would be at most for once in a while or for entertaining. No calorie data provided, but 1 cup of parmesan and 1 cup heavy cream with a little vegetable thrown in gives you a good idea.

Beautiful book, but not if you're looking for clean healthy recipes.

Must Buy! 27 Feb 2008

This is a fantastic book...it goes through each fruit and vegetable and tells you how to store them, the best ways to cook them, and even gives you recipes by section. Very colorful, very easy to read and understand - I've been bringing it to bed each night - you will thoroughly enjoy this book!

Wonderful book, but text is too small 11 Sep 2010
By C. Barnes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love the beautiful photographs and detailed recipes.

That being said, the recipe text is so tiny, I would say the font is a size 2 or 3, if they even make font that small.

I struggled to be able to see the recipe text in this book, using reading glasses and a magnifying glass.

I decided to return Five-a-Day Fruit & Vegetable Cookbook after reading something in the book.

This book is a compilation of The World Encyclopedia of fruit and The World Encyclopedia of Vegetables. I searched for these two books on Amazon.

The World Encyclopedia of Vegetables dimensions were: 12 x 9.3 x 1 inches

The World encyclopedia of Fruit dimensions were: 12 x 9.2 x 1 inches

The dimensions of Five-a-Day Fruit & Vegetable Cookbook are 8.5 x 6.8 x 1.5 inches.

I surmise that that when the books were combined, someone reduced the page size, which reduced text size, which explains the minuscule text.

suffice it to say, I have never seen a book with text this small.
