From Amazon.co.uk

Planning a wedding is no easy task, and finding the perfect moment for the big occasion is nothing short of impossible, but Violet (Emily Blunt) and Tom (Jason Segel) have no idea of the challenges ahead of them when they decide to get married. This slapstick comedy plays like the art of awkward: Violet, Tom, their friends, and families all have huge propensities for saying and doing the absolutely worst, most awkward thing in any given situation. From a bungled marriage proposal to a multimedia presentation about Tom's ex-girlfriends at the couple's engagement party, and an inappropriate hookup between Violet's sister Susie (Alison Brie) and Tom's good friend Alex (Chris Pratt), the impending nuptials promise nothing but trouble for everyone but viewers in the mood to laugh. Rising chef Tom sacrifices a job he loves in San Francisco, along with the promise of swift promotion, to follow academic Violet to a teaching fellowship in Michigan. The only job Tom can find there is in a sandwich shop, and the move puts their wedding plans on hold. As Violet pursues her dreams of teaching, Tom refuses to admit how unhappy he really is, instead desperately pursuing a friendship with a fellow faculty spouse that lands him with some very odd hobbies and not much fulfillment. Eventually, the strain takes a huge toll on their relationships with one another, their friends, coworkers, and families. But one thing is certain, director Nicholas Stoller makes sure that their journey is just as funny as it is sad. The Five-Year Engagement is an irreverent comedy that takes every opportunity to go well beyond the boundaries of good taste in the quest for laughter, and that really is the main point of the film. That said, Violet and Tom do actually share a few heartfelt moments and discover some very real truths--that no one can anticipate and solve all the problems of an impending marriage before they actually take the plunge, and there is absolutely no "perfect time" to get married. Of course, those moments of truth are arrived at by a winding path of awkward conversations, bawdy humor, ridiculous situations, and childish behavior that will keep viewers laughing out loud for pretty much the entire film. --Tami Horiuchi

3.0 out of 5 stars Not As Good As I Was Expecting 30 Jun 2012
Format:DVD
I have just seen this in the cinema and I have to say it was a bit of a letdown. I loved Bridesmaids and since this was from the same producers I was expecting it to be just as funny but it wasn't.
I really like Emily Blunt and I think Jason Segel is hilarious and in places the film was funny but it could have been so much better.
Tom and Violet get engaged but their wedding plans are soon put on hold when Violet is accepted at university and so she and Tom pack up and move to Michigan.
As the years pass their wedding keeps getting delayed much to the dismay of family and friends who are eager for them to get married.
At times the film seemed to drag on and the ending was predictible but it seemed to take ages for the film to get there without much happening. I think the film could easily have been 30 minutes shorter and not really lost anything plot wise.
It wasn't a bad film but it could have been much funnier.

This is the worst movie I have ever seen!! Ever! It was a paintful experience with every passing minute, and like another reviewer, if given the option I would have given zero stars. I have seen bad movies but this put me in such a bad mood and I never even bothered torturing myself to the end... !

1.0 out of 5 stars COMEDY - WHAT COMEDY 25 Feb 2013
Format:DVD
Very rarely have I watched a film that has made me want to search to the end hoping that even by fast forwarding it would become amusing.... unfortunately Five Year engagement made me want to do just that. Having seen both stars in films where they stole the show with their comedic turns this film failed to raise a laugh. The fact that it was spread over two hours was even more painful. I had selected this film as the trailer at the cinema gave the premise that this could be hilarious, however all I can say is the editing team deserve the greatest credit as when the clips when shown in the real context of the film they too failed to make me laugh. One to miss I am afraid.

2.0 out of 5 stars Can't believe I watched it all! 17 Nov 2012
By Doris
Format:DVD
This film is terrible!!! It was a predictable, badly written and unrealistic story. It made no sense whatsoever. Basically a couple meet, get engaged, then she gets a super duper job and he gives up his job and they both move - yet despite living together for some unknown reason are unable to get married? Won't tell you more as you may want to watch it, but suffice to say while the woman is pursuing her career noone is happy, when she sees the light happiness is in abundance.
On the plus side the acting (with the distint exception of the main character's sister) is making the best of a bad script.

1.0 out of 5 stars I had hoped this would be different... 5 Dec 2012
By Tim
Format:DVD
Yet another romantic comedy that has little romance and not much comedy either. Following in the vein of The Breakup, and numerous other American romcoms since then, the protagonists are, in large part, both selfish and stupid. Meaning it is difficult to warm to either of them, which is kind of the point of a romcom, isn't it? You root for the main characters to work things out or get together. In this one they both kind of get what their selfishness and stupidity deserves and, while it is nice to see them get together, you don't really care about them by the time they have displayed the depths of their stupidity. A shame as Segel and Blunt are usually so watchable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Long Awaited, SERIOUSLY disappointed 28 Nov 2012

Apart from a few brief funny moments (which are predominately seen on the trailer) this film is seriously not worth the money or the hours of your life that you will waste watching it. my recommendation is to steer clear and choose something different!

By C. Swain TOP 1000 REVIEWER

Whilst it is definitely true that there is sparkling chemistry between Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, and the film does have its hilarious moments, sadly it is about 30-40 mins far too long. This detracts from what could have been a very welcome addition to the rom-com genre. You know it is too long when you are itching for the credits to roll! Many of the most memorable moments feature in the movie trailer, but the main characters are so amiable that it doesn't really matter. This would have been a 4-5 Star movie if the makers had just shown some restraint. You can have far too much of a good thing and the film seemed almost as long as the engagement!! Story is as the title suggests.
Good but could have been superb if a lot shorter.
