Great Story 24 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
I bought this book at the Harrogate Crimefest and was fortunate enough to meet the author. Alex Gray is a very gracious and elegant lady who took time to engage with her fans (and there were plenty of them!).

The book is set in my home town of Greenock/Port Glasgow and it was fascinating to read a murder mystery set amidst such familiar landmarks. From the very start of the book, I was drawn into the plot and I found many characters interesting and sympathetic plus a few whom I got very irked by - but such was the power of the writing!

It's an unusual plot which sees Lorimer being drafted in to another division in order to review an unsolved case where two members of Kilmacolm's high society died in a house fire. Meanwhile the presence of a shadowy cyclist has been noted in the vicinity of a number of elderly deaths by falling. Further evidence emerges which causes Lorimer to link his case with that of the elderly deaths. Tension increases as Lorimer clashes with colleagues (one of which is in very high positions giving scope for further development in the future!). Alex Gray skilfully weaves several storylines together until they twist into an emotional and dramatic conclusion. She also addresses the issues of old-age frailty and dependency very sensitively and with an acute eye to detail.

This is my third Alex Gray novel and I find her to be a strong story-teller who is a absolute master of vivid imagery. She is a reliably good read and her attention to detail is nothing short of immaculate. She is also a firm favourite amongst my reading friends and I think she will be a strong name within the genre for a long time to come.

As a relative newcomer to Alex Gray I thought this was one of the best books I've read in ages. I'm Glaswegian but not local to the specific area so wasn't aware of the 'mistakes' in the locations. It was a great read and I read it over a couple of nights, always careful not to read too much in case I finished it too early - it's a long wait til the next one! I kind of sussed 'who done it' about three quarters of the way through. Great story and characters - please hurry and write another!

Great title- because it makes everyone start to wonder if they can list five ways to kill a man! A new parlour game? Well, not for the nervous! In most detective novels, the police mjust spend time looking for reasons behind any killings. DCI Lorimer's task becomes more difficult when it seems that some of these might be motiveless killings. A horrific house fire which kills a wealthy knight of the realm and his wife. makes Lorimer change direction. I like the way Alex Gray interposes grisly murders and increasing tension with domestic scenes of loving relationships. Skilled characterisation enhances this novel. As does the sense of place. At this point I must confess that one of the things I liked best about this book were the detailed descriptions of Kilmacolm village and the surrounding areas of Renfrewshire. Were they accurate? Absolutely. How do I know? I live there. I'm justthankful it wasn't my house that Alex burnt to the ground

Slightly too predictable
I enjoyed the book but I guessed the killer 80 pages in. The main pleasure of reading the rest of the book was seeing how Lorimer was going to get there. Read more

Incredible nonsense!
Incredible nonsense indeed! I've read all of Alex Gray's novels and they are sadly starting to fall off the edge of credibility. Read more

Well written
This is very well written and draws you in because you want to know who is doing the murders. Nice twist to the plot so you think a Police Officer is responsible but somewhere... Read more

Killer too obvious from the outset
I've read all the Lorimer books. This one was sufficiently interesting for me to read it at one sitting, but I felt the clues to the murderer's identity were too obvious and I... Read more

Another Brilliant Story
Alex Gray once again holds the readers mind by creating a graphic scene with words. It keeps you guessing all the way through with the odd twist here and there. Read more

5 Ways to Kill a Man
Another great, un-put-downable book from Alex Gray. One or two geographical mistakes - such as the location of Cardwell Bay which is not adjacent to the Cardwell Bay Nursery. Read more
