Publication Date: 7 Jun 2012 | Series: Jess Jordan
Horrors! Jess's Mum has joined an online dating programme and has recruited Jess as advisor, while Jess's best friend Flora has a rich new boyfriend who Jess can't possibly keep up with. Then Jess's own boyfriend, Fred, does something unbelievably treacherous and spineless. Jess is becoming completely fed up with the male sex, and is beginning to think that the only reliable form of male is e-mail . . . Never mind, there's Valentine's Day to look forward to. Fred is sure to make amends then. Isn't he?
Another laugh-out-loud story featuring the charming but insane Jess Jordan. It's only when you've stopped laughing that you realise that, in addition to writing with wit and warmth, Sue Limb has also dealt effortlessly with bigger and important themes of friendship and loyalty.

Limb's heroine is cleverer than Rennison's, less bonkers than McKay's, but just as captivating
(The Times)
Hilarious and spot-on how it captures those boyfriend blues (Mizz)
Limb weaves such themes as friendship and rivalry, the importance or not of appearances and so forth . . . this is pink lit that girls (and boys with a copy in a plain wrapper) will love (Books for Keeps)
Very funny and sharply observed, this is the kind of book no teenage girl should be without (The Bookseller)
Book Description
The fantastically funny Jess Jordan in complete romantic chaos - a fiasco from which true love may never recover
Sue Limb is a very, very funny woman. In fact, she's almost as funny as Louise Rennison who, to me, is the undisputed Queen of YA Humour. Limb's books have a similar lighthearted feel, and make light of all the worst and most embarrassing moments of being a teenager.
Girl, 16: Five Star Fiasco is the fifth book in the Jess Jordan series, and is the first I've read. I think these books can be read as standalone titles, as I had no problem picking the series up from book 5. It mentions some previous goings-on that sound hilarious, so I think I will go back and read the rest at some point. Perhaps that's the reason I didn't enjoy this one more, as I haven't followed these characters through their last couple of teen years.
Limb's characters are quirky and fun, though not without their teen drama. There's relationship angst, parental problems and an identity crisis or two - basically everything you'd expect a 16-year-old to go through. Jess has a great individual voice, and is well on her way to becoming a comedian. I also really like her mum and dad, and boyfriend Fred, though he does cross over to the idiot side about halfway through the book.
Jess and her dad start writing a story called 'Lord of the Wrongs', and each write a section before sending it back to the other person. The extracts are some of the funniest things I've ever read, and as soon as I got to the part with Donald the snail and his motor attachment (not to mention SnailNav), I was cracking up laughing. Really, it's brilliant stuff, and I just wish there had been more from this story. Jess's dad stops writing it quite abruptly, then it's just sort of forgotten, which is a shame. I could have read much more!
I'm looking forward to reading more by Sue Limb, as her writing brightens up my day.... I'll be sure to check out the rest of the Jess Jordan books, as well as the Zoe & Chloe series, of which I've read the latest instalment. They are a lot of fun!
Although this is the fifth book in the series I had no trouble with it being the first book I read. It definitely works as a standalone but I was I enjoyed this one so much I wish I had started from the beginning.
The story follow Jess. She is trying to organise a charity event with her boyfriend Fred but is not really getting anywhere fast, her mother has decided to try online dating and needs Jess to 'help', and her dad decides he needs her help in writing a book - all of which proves a little too much for Jess...
I really loved the characters - especially Jess. They are all really quirky and great fun to spend time with. I laughed out loud so many times! I also really loved Jess and Fred's relationship - and this is where I wish I had read all the books - to see how this progressed and evolved. I'm very intrigued to see what happens with them - where they go from here.
I loved the story Jess and her dad were writing - it really stood out and I looked forward to more installments of it. I can understand why they stopped with it but I do hope it is revisited in future books.
Genuinely laugh out loud funny. And utterly charming - I couldn't help but fall in love with it. It's one of those books I picked up knowing I'd probably like but ended up loving. I'm looking forward to tracking down the rest of the series and starting from the beginning. Lighthearted, funny and thoroughly enjoyable!
I read Girl, 16: Five Star Fiasco shortly after finishing Kisses for Lula and I loved both stories. They're right up my street; light hearted, funny and very contemporary. I haven't read the first story in Sue Limb's series but I didn't have any problems making sense of the story or characters, which is great.
Jess and Fred's relationship is what makes this book so great. Although they do go through issues in Girl 16, Five Star Fiasco, their relationship is real and, importantly, based on friendship. They're just as happy to sit around having a laugh as they are to be alone as a couple which I really enjoyed reading about, after a slew of Twilight-style epic love stories that seem so over-dramatic and unrealistic for everyday teens.
I'm a newly converted fan of Sue Limb's work and I'll definitely be looking forward to reading more of her work in the near future. Hurrah for Jess and Fred!
To be honest this is a tale in an already established series and one that unfortunately I didn't really get into. The characters were clunky (although this could be due to their multiple appearances) there was no real character growth and above all else it seemed a little bit too far fetched to be set in the real world. It's a great shame as I really hoped that this would have done more as well as endearing and aiding the younger reader of this offering with the ways to help deal with life's little struggles. A great shame in all.
