Product Description

Product Description

Five special stories… let your imagination run riot by entering the imagination of one of the worlds most treasured and celebrated Childrens book authors.

Contains James and The Giant Peach, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, The Enormous Crocodile, The Magic Finger and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.” - Roald Dahl

What’s so wonderful about Dahl is that he manages to tell his tales so beautifully through the eyes of a child. He would portray his characters and surroundings in such a way that you could almost be placed in the story yourself - and that is the true beauty of his talent. Adults and Children alike can envisage the unusual. Welcome to the world of Dahl.

Read by the author himself, these five stories are told in such a way that you can imagine Dahl reading them to you and you only. Prepare to be whisked away into the mind of one of Britain’s best story tellers.

About the Author

Roald Dahl was born on the 13th September 1916 and died on 23rd November 1990. He was a British novelist, short story writer and screenwriter, born in Wales of Norwegian parents. After service in the Royal Air Force, he rose to prominence in the 1940s with works for both children and adults, and became one of the world's bestselling authors. His short stories are known for their unexpected endings, and his children's books for their unsentimental, often very dark humour. Some of his most popular books include The Twits, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The Witches and The BFG.

Entertaining Dahl 2 July 2009
Format:Audio CD
I bought this audio CD for my boys, who are 4 and 6. There are 4 stories on the CD (as pictured, not 5, as in the written description - Fantastic Mr Fox doesn't feature), and of these, The Magic Finger and The Enormous Crocodile are unabridged, whilst James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are abridged. The stories are read by Roald Dahl himself, and while it is nice to hear them read by the author, he is perhaps not as expressive as other narrators (e.g. Stephen Fry or Martin Jarvis). Still, they have become a firm favourite with the boys, who often request them in the car or to listen to in bed. The stories combine humour with the slightly macabre overtones that Roald Dahl is so good at, and which the kids really engage with, and they are all great stories.

I think these books must have been recorded for an American audience, as the language and currency is US not UK. For example, in James and the Giant Peach, the ladybird is a ladybug, and in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie finds a dollar (not a pound, as I remembered from my childhood - perhaps my memory plays tricks?) and gets his change in cents. Minor irritations I know, and not important to their primary audience, who have not yet read the books and so are none the wiser!

You can't deny that Roald Dahl books are fantastic for children. The word play is great and it introduces a lot of new vocabulary to your child. I bought a variety of audio books for my son (this set being one of them) as we were going on a long car journey. Initially I found this set inferior to my other purchases for two reasons:
1. It is read by Roald Dahl himself, and although he is a fantastic author, he is not an actor, and his voice is slightly monotone and a little fast.
2. There were no sound effects, unlike the other audio books that I have heard. The others also had actors reading the parts of different characters, as well as sound effects in the background.

Having said this, I have now got used to the style of this set and my son doesn't appear to mind (in fact it might leave more to the imagination) and I certainly think that the stories are so fabulous, I wouldn't return it or swap it for something else.

This is a lovely story c.d collection. My son is so pleased and loves listening to it in the car. (I am enjoying it too, it's bringing back childhood memories!) A classic for all children.
