Book Description

8 July 2002 Bloomsbury Paperbacks
Five little fiends live in their own little statues on top of a hill. Every day the five little fiends come out to marvel at the world. Each fiend covets and takes home a different thing: the moon, sea, earth, land and wind are all taken home. However, the fiends soon realise that one thing is nothing without the whole, and they put it all back again, learning about sharing on the way.

Amazon Review

Five Little Fiends is certainly different and probably unique in its presentation of an important concept: that of sharing, something that children of all ages need to discuss and understand. The five little fiends in question live inside statues and look out at the world. They each choose a part of it, their favourite individual part, and take them home, back to their statues to look at whenever they choose. The sun, the moon, the land, the sky and the sea are all removed and stowed away in the statues. Read the story and find out what happens, when each little fiend realises the global impact of his or her combined selfishness. Most of the text is straightforward, though some vocabulary may require explanation, and the format and layout of the illustrations is simple and uncluttered, all adding emphasis to the overlying theme of sharing. The book will be accessible to quite a large age range of children, because it highlights a concept that needs to be accompanied by discussion. ‘A simple message, boldly told, brilliantly designed – you couldn’t ask for more from a book’ -- Sunday Telegraph

‘A truly original and wonderfully simple heartwarming picture book by a brand new illustrator who is just bursting onto the scene’ -- Books for Keeps

Five Little Fiends is a wonderfully imaginative little book that celebrates our earth in an educational and very charming way. It tells a story of how the five little fiends wish to capture their favourite element for themselves, whether it be the sun, moon, sea, earth or sky. Once captured, however, they realize that without the other four elements, the one they have chosen to keep cannot survive. Beautifully executed, the illustrations are not only origional, but magical. It seems a great deal of thought has gone into the space within the drawings which is so essential to the story. I would recommend this lovely little find to any child or adult.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Forest School sessions 8 Jun 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have used this book several times in Forest School sessions, mostly at Playgroup, Early Years and Key Stage One level. The book is simple, grabs attention with it's ideas and clear pictures and is a short tale to read which is useful when wriggly bottoms want to go and play in the woods. I recap the book at the end of some sessions and use it to introduce the idea of 'leave as you find' - respecting the wood, it's plants, creatures and other people who may come along another time.
