3.0 out of 5 stars 'Well, good luck, old man', 29 May 2009
By Mr. H. F. Murden (New Barnet, Herts, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Stephen Chalke recounts the momentous events of the 15th & 16th of June 1932 when the legendary Yorkshire opening batsmen, Percy Holmes and Herbert Sutcliffe, surpassed the record stand for the first wicket set by their YCCC predecessors Brown and Tunnicliffe way back in 1898. Or did they ......

The controversey surrounding Holmes' and Sutcliffe's score - be it 554 or 555 is thoroughly examined by the author. His conclusion ? I'll let you read the book !

Both batsmen, the immaculately presented run machine that was Herbert Sutcliffe and his partner the irrepressible, lumbago plagued Percy Holmes are discussed. Notwithstanding the author's undoubted respect for the amazing achievements of Sutcliffe it is the warm affection with which he writes about Percy Holmes that really touches the reader.

As well as the players, both YCCC and Essex, the history and fortunes surrounding the old ground at Leyton are also followed.

A number of atmospheric black and white photographs accompany the narrative of this charming book which brings to life two of Yorkshire cricket's great characters.
