Well worth the wait 9 Aug 2006
Format:Audio CD
Anyone who knows anything about folk music, and folk/rock of the late 1970s in particular, will need no introduction to this collection of the three classic LPs that Dick Gaughan, Bobby Eaglesham & Co recorded for RCA. To say that their release on CD has been long and eagerly awaited is the understatement to beat all understatements.

The good news is that they have all been digitally remastered from the original tapes, and they sound superb. I used to own the second and third (probably the most commercial) LPs and I can safely say they sound as good now as I remember them then.

The accompanying booklet contains a factual history of the band and synopsis of the album tracks, by John O'Regan of BGO Records, together with full lyrics, and glossary for those of us born south of Hadrian's Wall.

There is no bad news.

The tracklisting currently shown above is not correct. CD1 consists of tracks 1-9 only; this is the first, eponymous, album. CD2 has the remaining 17 tracks, being the other two albums.

For anyone unfamiliar with the name, if you like Fairport or Steeleye Span, or any of the electric folk bands of the 1970s, or even up to date, you will love this combination of (mostly traditional) Scottish and Irish songs and tunes, in a modern setting, with Dick Gaughan's heavy, broad Scots vocals, offset occasionally by the late Bobby Eaglesham's lighter ones.

They say everything comes to he who waits. We have certainly waited long and hard for this CD, and it's well worth it.

Folk rock at its best 22 Dec 2006
Format:Audio CD
I love this band having 5 Hand Reel and the Earl of Moray on LP. I was also fortunate enough to have seen them twice in the 1970s at the University of Bristol.

They were fantastic on stage and these recordings are not over engineered so even though they are studio recordings you can appreciate the energy they had.

Great memories and a pity they only recorded the 3 albums and with the death of Bobby Eaglesham there will never be a reunion.

If Dick Gaughan reads this thanks Dick for this band as well as your solo work which I also love.

RIP Bobby Eaglesham 2 Oct 2007
Format:Audio CD
I've just googled Bobby's name after listening to his lovely voice again on the Collected burns CDs, and read about his death three years ago. What a loss. His versions on these 5 hand reel discs of songs like Red red rose, ae fond kiss, Carrickfergus, Earl of Moray...are just utterly utterly beautiful. He really should have recorded a lot more. A great Scottish voice.
