Spoooky. 20 Mar 2007

One of the better Famous Five mysteries - loads of food, spook trains, villains, farms, night-time adventures and Timmy. Throw in secret caves and puppies and you have yet another successful FF book.

This is a most enjoyable read, and I hope children nowadays take the time to sit down with books.

I grew up reading and loving Enid Blyton books (and would like to confirm that I am a non-racist feminist). Every now and then, particularly if I have a bad cold, I like to revisit them (comfort reading), so I thought I'd download a couple for my new Kindle. I noticed that some of the titles stated that they were revised or updated or something, so I steered clear of those and bought ones that had original title. However, as I started reading it was clear that the language had been modernised. This kind of insidious revisionism makes me furious. I grew up in the 80's not the 40's and I managed to enjoy and relate to the stories. The language and attitudes of the books is part of what makes them special, and different from today's children's literature (much of which is very good - but DIFFERENT). I think it should be made much clearer when original classic works have been tampered with so they can't be bought by mistake, and it should not be so difficult to obtain copies of them in their original form. I have returned them, and will go to a second hand book shop next time, to be on the safe side.

Apart from Five Run Away Together, this is my favourite book ever - because of the trains!

I've always loved trains ever since I was one. And Enid Blyton decided to host the Five having an adventure with spook trains! Oh Enid please let me be part of the story!

I like the other characters, including Jock and Mrs Andrews(now that's my name!!) but Mr Andrews was awful. I did not like him at all. He was a disaster- not letting the Five see the trains... I would have been horrible to him if he told me I was not allowed to see the spook trains.

If you like Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy, or are a fan of trains, then this book is just for you.

Thanks for the spook - trains, Enid Blyton!
