Product Description

Product Description

When Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane and their baby brother go digging in the gravel pit, the last thing they expect to find is a Psammead – an ancient Sand-fairy! Having a Sand-fairy for a pet means having one wish granted each day. But the children don't realize all the trouble wishes can cause . . .

A timeless classic with an introduction by Quentin Blake, award-winning illustrator and first-ever Children's Laureate (1999–2001).

About the Author

Edith Nesbit (1858–1924) began writing stories for children after a popular children's magazine of the time approached her to write pieces about her childhood. The result was a series of bestselling children's books that have remained firm favourites, including The Railway Children, The Story of the Treasure Seekers and The Phoenix and the Carpet.

This is a wonderful book, and I remember reading it in my 1970s childhood, and am now reading it to my son. What is strange however is that I don't remember it seeming so old-fashioned when I read it as a child. That the chilren had maids and cooks, and country houses just seemed to me like children were in stories, just as children in stories all seemed to go to boarding school or own horses. The point I am making is that while to a modern, adult reader, the style may seem more fitting to its 1900 origins than a present-day readership, this will not present a problem to children, who will just enjoy the adventure, the magic, and the story.

The story starts when five children (including a baby, who must occasionally be cared for by his older brothers and sisters) move away to a country house and their mother and father have to leave them in the care of their servants. This rather Victorian premise is really just a dramatic device to get rid of the adults and allow the children to have a jolly good time on their own. It isn't long before they encounter a strange creature in a quarry, and find that it will grant them wishes. But the wishes do not always turn out as the children might expect!

I recommend this for children of seven upwards.

I run a childrens book group. The children take turns at choosing a book. This was the choice for the summer. All the Children are aged 10, some very good readers, some not so good, both boys and girls. Most had seen the film - the book is nothing like the film. Only one child managed to finish it. As the previous review says it is very old fashioned, but not just the story - the writing style reflects when it was written. I have to say even I gave up half way through! I was no longer interested.
