Product Description

Review

""In this age of trendy diets and looming obesity statistics, this book couldn't be more useful. Fitness researcher, educator, and author Sharkey (health & human performance, emeritus, Univ. of Montana), who first published this renowned guide in 1974, here teams up with Olympic coach Gaskill
(health & human performance, Univ. of Montana) for the sixth edition. Known as the thinking person's fitness book, this work discusses not only how to eat and exercise well but also why one should adopt such a lifestyle. The authors maintain a focus on the emotional as well as physical benefits of exercise and support their recommendations with relevant research studies and statistics. The book's scholarly nature makes it a staple in many college health courses, but in this particular edition, which encourages engaging in the active life rather than just focusing on performance, Sharkey and Gaskill also draw in the average reader by including straightforward sample fitness programs, training tips, activities, and basic injury care. Their relaxed tone and dispersed inspirational quotes from such luminaries as Chinese Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu and science fiction/fantasy author Ursula K.
Le Guin also engage readers. Essential for academic and larger public libraries."
Jennifer Johnston, formerly with San Bernardino P.L., CA
"Library Journal," October 15, 2006

There is no field of human study that attracts more charletons, fools and rip-off merchants that human health, particularly in the area of weight management. I spent 10 years in the Army, ran marathons, triathalons and other quite ridiculous physical challenges and this is the book that I keep on my bookshelf.

Dr Sharkey takes a very educational and practical approach to writing on human health. He does not treat you like a child, so here you will find detailed scientific information on how your body works, how fitness and health is assessed and the standards by which you should judge yourself (not the average of the people around you now - but by 1950's grades). He then lays out in step by step level exactly what you have to do, from assessing how fit you are, to initial improvements and balancing cardio-vascular, strength and flexibility.

Buy this book, put it into practice and ignore that vast swayths of rubbish that you see about the subject - in this case the Doctor really does know best.

Fitness and Health is one of the set books of my sports university course and in my opinion it is excellent. The authors explain things exceptionally well and cover a wide variety of topics: health benefits of exercise, aerobis fitness, muscular fitness, nutrition and health, weight-control programs, vitality and longevity, health screening etc. There are plenty of colour photos in the section which features stretching, calisthenics, weight-lifting exercises and sample training plans for aerobic exercise. Within the nutrition section, several diets are mentioned including their pros and cons, and an extensive list of foods and their caloric content. Very recommendable if you want proper advice on how to get and stay fit and healthy.

The book gives an introduction to several issues relating to physical exercise, but falls short on useful information. As an example, in the chapter: "Implementing an Aerobic Fitness Program" they give some work out schedules at different levels, but do not give any help as to how to build your own.

The book focuses on either those starting out with no background, or states that one should do exercises specific to your sport. It has no room for those who want to be generally fit.
The authors have explicitly chosen not to use heart rate as a guide to intensity, evidently as it is to rigid and, when the book was published, not common with such equipment.

In the section about strength, they have plenty of pictures of various exercises, but do not give advice as to what combination to use. It is a bit like walking round the gym looking at the pictures on the various machines.
