Amazon.co.uk Review

Jet Li stars in Fist of Legend, a 1994 remake of The Chinese Connection (also known as Fists of Fury, which starred the greatest martial arts legend of them all, Bruce Lee). This film is set in 1937, when Shanghai was occupied by the Japanese and racial tensions were high. Jet Li is Chen Zhen, who returns to Shanghai to avenge the death of his master, whom he learns was poisoned. His popular freestyle fighting technique and Japanese girlfriend do not endear him to his former friend, now his master's successor at the martial arts school.

If Jackie Chan is inspired by Buster Keaton, Li seems to be channelling Steve McQueen here. He speaks softly and carries a big kick, and like Steven Seagal, even when he is under siege by a horde of attackers, no one can lay a finger on him. The dialogue and dubbing are atrocious, but the fight sequences are incredible (they were choreographed by Woo-ping Yuen, who lent his expertise to The Matrix). Perhaps most memorable is a bout between Chen and his girlfriend's uncle during which the combatants wear blindfolds. This is essential viewing for martial arts buffs and Li's growing legion of fans. --Donald Liebenson, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars This film is by far the best Jet Li motion picture ever., 19 Feb 2002
This review is from: Fist of Legend [DVD] (DVD)
This is a stunning film that is directed with such originality and skill that every actor and aspect of the film is something to be treasurred.

Jet Li plays Chen Zen, a young Chinese man with brilliant martial arts skill that is sent to Japan to study by his teacher in order to learn as much as he can of the new world. The film is set before World War 2 and tensions between the Japanese and Chinese are high.
After discovering that his teacher has fought in a duel with a Japanese fighter and was killed during the battle Chen Zen returns to his martial arts school intending to investigate his Master's death. Not willing to believe that his Master was killed so easily Chen challenges the Japanese fighter that killed his Master that is not before he takes on a whole schoolful of Japanese martial artists and wipes the floor with them. Upon defeating the Japanese fighter easily Chen demands an aultopsy be commited on his Master's corpse, he discovers that his Master was poisened prior to the duel and that his death was due to the poisoning. Then, after he is framed and rescued by the Japanese woman that he fell in love with whilst in Japan, Chen finds that his loyalties between his love and his fellow students are tested while his has the fight of his life against an invincible Japanese General played by the unforgetable Billy Chou.
Fist of Legend hosts some of the most fantastic and edge of your seat fight scenes ever filmed as well as a good story and script that see's rivalry; friendship; and conflict between Chen Zen and his Masters's son whom is played by Chin Sui Ho(who is renowned for his portrail in the Yuen Woo Ping Martial Art epic Tai Chi Master-also called in the West Twin Warriors). As always Yuen Woo Ping delivers awesome fight scenes which all deliver something new and exciting as you watch each and every one of them.

Fist of Lregend is a ten out of ten classic directed by Beast Cops-Gordon Chan; staring Jet Li, Chin Sui Ho, and Billy Chou; and has fight scenes choregraphed by Iron Monkeys-Yuen Woo Ping.
This film is a must have for Jet Li fans

5.0 out of 5 stars Top quality film spoiled by naff dubbing., 30 April 2002

This review is from: Fist of Legend [DVD] (DVD)
The only problem with this DVD title is its lack of options - no language option being its major let down, leaving you only with a dubbed version in ridiculous american accents, missing and changing original dialogue and script to make it easier to understand for the general(American)market. There isn't any other special features for this 'jet li collection' edition which in turn is rather dissapointing and frankly not worth its price tag. Though, strangely, none of these points are brought to our attention before buying this film however. The film itself however, is top quality - Jet Li showing a great number of skills (although, admmitedly slightly enhanced by speeded up film to make a point of this being a Bruce Lee re-make (Fist Of Fury) showing phenominal speed and precision in 0ne-hit-punches, not to mention wires for super-human movement and balance)and by far Jet Li's best acting to date. Highly reckomended for any Jet Li and respectivly Kung-Fu fanatic for the wikid fight scenes although let down by its lame and unchangable english dubbed version and its pathetic lack of extras.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, 29 Nov 2002

This review is from: Fist of Legend [DVD] (DVD)
Definately the best martial arts film I have ever seen. Miles better than the Bruce Lee film it was based on (Fist of Fury). The fact it takes place around World War II is more apparent (makes the film more interesting) and the Japanese are not as villanised as much as in the 1972 original. For example Jet Li's character (Chen Zen) has a Japanese girlfriend and both karate masters are 'honorable' compared to the evil Japanese general. The action is directed by Yuen Woo Ping of 'Drunken Master', 'OUATIC 2' 'Matrix' and 'Crouching Tiger..' fame and he betters them all in terms of fight sequences (I thought the action in the Matrix was very overated and nothing new). There is minimal use of wires, even though I do not mind their use in some films. The fights are very realistic. Li employs a western boxing/kung fu hybrid in some scenes which is cool. The recreation of the infamous 'Fist of Fury' nunchaku fight with Jet Li wielding a belt has to be seen to be believed. Would definately recommend this, and also 'Tai Chi Master' and 'OUATIC 2' also with Jet Li and directed by Yuen Woo Ping, although these film use far more wire work.
