Those with a liking of origins of 20th century clarinet playing should revel in this selection of five pieces. Three of them (by Arnold Bax, Roger Fiske and Iain Hamilton) were premièred by one of England's finest clarinettists,Frederick Thurston, who's untimely early death at the age of 52 in 1953 left his young widow and pupil Thea King and music lovers at the time devastated by such a loss. He commissioned works from a goodly number of composers of his period and the items here by Fiske and Hamilton were dedicated to him.
The rest of the cd comprises two works commissioned by the disc's soloist, Nicholas Cox and given premières by him with pianist Vanessa Latarche. These are Paraphrase on Bird of Paradise by Hugh Wood and the Duo cocertante by Richard Rodney Bennett. All in all here we have almost 69 minutes of splendid playing by Nicholas Cox, more than ably accompanied by Ian Buckle at the piano and recorded in August 2011.
