It was my sister that bought this little gadget for knife sharpening as a gift for our mother. The knife sharpener is from the firm Kitchen Devils so I had expected it to be a quality product. I usually sharpen the kitchen knives and normally use a steel or a stone, and in the case of extreme bluntness both.

The problem started when we first used it. Even though the instructions were followed the knives ended up completely blunt and several hours had to be spent with the sharpening stone and the steel in order to get an edge back on each knife.

I was also disappointed with the quality of the sharpener. If I hadn't known it was from Kitchen Devils I would have assumed it was a cheap no-name company. It is plastic and appears cheap and tacky - significantly less than I expect from this company. The grinding wheels are poor quality, which I would normally have blamed from the blunting of the knives; however, I believe that this is a good idea badly produced.

After my boyfriend bought me some Sabatier knives, I was keen to find a knife sharpener to keep them really nice and sharp. When I was looking through all the different products available, I noticed that the Kitchen Devils Rollsharp Sharpener came highly recommended. I read all the reviews and saw nothing wrong with it and it was considerably cheaper than a lot of the other sharpeners. So I decided to purchase it. When it arrived I was incredibly keen to try it out. It was alright to begin with, but the more I used my knives the less I noticed that the Rollsharp was doing anything. Perhaps it might work better on thinner knives. I think I am going to try a whetstone and then use the Rollsharp just quickly before each use, giving my knives a good sharpener with the stone every so often. I was quite disappointed with this product, but when I think about how much it costs, its hardly worth getting annoyed about!!

I've had one of these for these for over 10 years and although I use it daily, it still puts an edge on a knife sharp enough to shave with. That said, the action is very gentle and so I wouldn't recommend it for regrinding an already blunt knife.
I've tried numerous alternatives over the years, but find them either too imprecise to give reproducible results (steels) or too aggressive in their action (most other kinds) to regularly use on expensive knives.
Don't be fooled by the price; this is the finest knife sharpener that money can buy (until the patent runs out...).
