I have been waiting to see this film for a year and a half now, ever since i viewed pictures of the production, and kelly in her fantastic mermaid costume. I have always had a fascination with the ocean and mermaids, so despite the fact that critics were bashing this movie i knew i would want to buy it anyways. Overall the film really was not that bad, you couldn't exactly say it is the greatest movie of all time, but it is a charming film, and certainly a good way to spend an hour and a half.
The story is pretty simple, a Harvard professor moves to a Greek island for the summer with his daughter Serena. Serena meets a mermaid called Nereid, and using the Grecian enchantments and love spells that her father studies, Serena makes the two fall in love. Not exactly the most intricate plot, and some of the humour in the film is very childish (which always really annoys me)however, Billy Zane actually is quite comical at points, he really pulls of the whole absent minded professor thing quite well! But the focal point of the movie for me was all of the uunderwater sequences, they are absolutley lovely, and Kelly's costume is amazing, her fins even twitch and flip up and down like a genuine fishtail! So if, like me, you have a thing about mermaids, or your a fan of the actors or just want soemthing nice to look at, then give fishtales a go, its really worth it, and lovely to look at.
