Product Description

Product Description

For the mum who wants to stay in touch with baby, this monitor's clear view light display lets you not only hear, but actually see the different levels of baby's activity. The bright arcs of light increase with the sounds baby makes meaning you can see baby's call clearer than ever and from a greater distance. Durable, flexible antennas allow for greater range and excellent clarity. Two channels minimise interference and the receiver is AC-powered or battery-powered for portability.

If you're away from baby (baby's sleeping and you're cooking, or baby is content in a playpen and you need to do five minutes of housework) a monitor can help you keep a track on how your child is doing. The primary use of a monitor is if your baby sleeps away from you and the baby's room is a distance from yours, you are able to hear when baby calls for you. Try one that works with both sounds and lights. That way, you can also see the lights blinking when baby wakes and calls for you, and this Fisher-Price Sounds 'n Lights monitor has just this.

Other features include a built-in night light, volume control, 2 channels to minimise interference, a low battery indicator and a handy belt-clip on the receiver for when taking with you around the house or garden. The transmitter is mains operated while the receiver is battery operated for roaming use, but can also be mains operated for when you're not on the move. Requires 3x AA batteries (not included).

Manufacturer's Description

5 light display to show baby's activity level. Crystal clear reception and 2 channels. The monitor can be powered by 1 x 9V battery (Not included) or by the mains.

I've never written a review before, but after reading the other review I thought I ought to tip the balance in favour of the FP Sounds and Lights monitor.
My son is currently 13 months old and we were given this monitor by a family friend who no longer needed it when bubba was around 1 month and it does just what we need it to do.
We can hear our sons cries, his chatter when he wakes and when he turns in his sleep. The clarity is not so brilliant that we can hear his breathing but if I was going to concentrate on that then I may as well be in the room with him!! I usually leave it in the lounge and just turn the volume up if I am in the kitchen (which is next door) and can hear him fine if he needs me.
The nightlight is really useful when I go to check on him before going to bed. It isn't terribly bright but I wouldn't want it to be. It was fine when he was much smaller and having his night feeds and needed a nappy change (I've NEVER been able to change a nappy in the pitch black!) and I'm sure that he finds the orange glow reassuring if he wakes up.
The reception is every so often fuzzy but it is always when the weather is particulary bad, but we tend to leave it in the same place downstairs plugged into the mains (saves paying for and replacing batteries!) with no problems. We have used it a various friends houses and it has worked fine.
We found it so good that we purchased a second one for the grandparents house from Boots for £20 and I must confess that they did get some static when they had it too near to other electrical things, but they have now worked out the best places in every room to put it and think it's great.

We have been using this monitor with our 1st baby and are really pleased with it. If like us you don't want to spend a small fortune and just want a basic baby monitor this is perfect. The reception is clear & picks up every sound your baby makes. It's not the most attractive of baby monitors and the night light is pretty pathetic but it does the job well. If you live in a two story house i would recommend getting two receivers so you can have one in your bedroom and one downstairs, it just saves plugging and unplugging it all the time - silly thing but with a baby it's worth doing anything to make life simpler!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value low-cost basic baby monitor 22 Nov 2009
By S J
I decided to buy this Fisher Price monitor after being attracted by the price and also that it was a well-known baby goods brand. Most of the reviews I read for all kinds of monitors had reports of interference no matter how expensive, so thought may as well go for a basic one if that's the case and spend the money on other things.

I was initially disappointed with the interference and buzzing when I first removed it from the box and tested it out and no matter where I placed the monitor/receiver it wouldn't make a difference the loud buzz was there. I was contemplating returning the product the noise was that bad. I assumed the problem must be my wi-fi router or other radio signals in the area.

Then I had a closer look at the instructions and it mentioned something about making sure the power cable should not be tangled or crossed over itself as it uses it for reception or something. At this point I had the power lead still tied up in a coil as it was supplied in the box. I untangled the transmitter power lead (the baby side unit) and stretched it out long and taut from the power socket and placed the monitor so the wire was laid out straight. I did the same with the receiver and found the furious static buzzing had gone, and replaced by a gentle low 'murmur' and I decided to keep it since it was a total improvement from before!

The monitor is very sensitive and picks up baby's slightest whimper although breathing is not picked unless its heavy. The light volume indicator is also a good feature and brings baby activity to your attention should the sound be drowned by other noise in the room you are in (e.g. the TV).

4.0 out of 5 stars Why pay more? 16 July 2009
I researched the more expensive monitors, and to be honest, this monitor does none of the annoying things that much more expensive monitors are reported to do, and everything it needs to do, well. If ours ever packs in (baby #2 is now 8 months old) we will replace it with another FP monitor, we are very happy with its performance and value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value for money - but didn't last long 11 Dec 2008
I bought this so that I would hear the doorbell in my home office when all the doors in between are closed to keep the heat in.
It does exactly what I need and the sound is nice and clear. Can't go wrong for the money.

I had expensive Tomy baby monitors when my kids were small, and for more than three times the cost I can't say that the build quality was much better really. (They did have room temperature indicators though).

Edited after 11 months: the speaker in the parent end of the monitor has now stopped working so I need to buy a new one. (Can't be bothered to return it for the price I paid). I think I'll upgrade a bit next time and hopefully get something a bit more durable.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the price it is grand as an occasional monitor
It has interference issues, especially near a TV. It's cheap and we use it as a travel monitor when we are away. We could not stand it all the time hissing in the corner.
